De CaT Headers

The main three are Akrapovic, Remus and Keihan:thumb2

I used to sell a lot of the Keihans and my bike was the test mule. They are made on Redditch and top quality kit http://www.keihan.co.uk/catalogue.html#. The advantage of these over the more expensive ones are they are the same dimensions as the standard ones so look identical on the bike. You also aren't paying for the name....!!!

At the end of the day, they all do the same job and you pays your money etc etc.

Just fitted..

Akropovic headers.... :thumb2

Already had the matching can...

Had little run out yesterday... Engine feels a lot more responsive ... Revs easier...hilltop next sat, so hope to get set up properly :bounce1:bounce1

Only concern ... Durability ... Those little springs on the joints will be a pig to keep clean..

Or you could cut open and gut your OE headers.

I have Remus headers on mine with the standard can. The Akro can made a huge performance difference but it was offensively loud, even with a baffle in.

Oooh err....thanks for the input. I am at Hilltop on the 14th. I have already fitted a Akri end can which I believe is road legal (?), I assume cat out and no flap valve makes a lot of noise?

Headers

If you decide to cut out the cat on your standard headers I have a brand new set in the garage which you could have for a reasonable sum so that you can always put it back to standard if you want. :augie

+1 on the Keiham headers, top quality good fit and much cheaper than the others. I run them with an Ackro on a 2013 GSA

They also have the balance pipe as per the OEM, BMW must have put it there for a reason?

My set up is: Akra Titanium end can + remus headers + re-map + quickshifter = miles of smiles, great performance & a happy me :D

The balance pipe makes sense with two separate pipes and cans As on the old airheads. The valve opening pulse on one side creates a suction in the opposite side via the balance tube. But the R1200 has the headers joined further down where each side creates a suction on the other. The balance pipe really can't be doing much if anything. Though it does protect the timing cover from flying stones.
I've ridden a GSA with Remus headers (no balance pipe) and mine with Akra headers (with balance pipe) & can't feel any difference. If it's visible on a dyno I doubt there's very much.

Still applying Man Logic, knowing BMW if they didn't think they needed 1ft of stainless steel pipe 2 welds and 2 holes cut on every exhaust on each bike they wouldn't spend the money doing it. :blagblah

What about the expensive catalytic converter, that most other don't manufacturers fit??? Or 3 switches for indicators when 1 works just fine?

It's a BMW, what else would we have to slag off if they where the same as all those Rice Burners!

I've left flap valve in.. Went for Bimble into Wales yesterday, Sunday ... With the good wife ridding behind.... She says it's very loud.... So might put baffle back in... But there again .... Maybe not :green gri

I binned the whole exhaust and fitted a complete de-catted system inc end can, and also binned the flapper valve thingy too ;)

You're right of course but the bike is full of costly afterthoughts so the expense of a bit of exhaust tube wont have even crossed (come near) the project manager's mind. "We've always done it like that so don't rock the boat".

  • Rear top case racks with add on rack because the original design just HAD to have straight lines.
  • LHS side case chopped about because they could not be bothered to sit the exhaust parallel to the wheel
  • Cross spoke wheels when it's perfectly possible to seal the rim centreline spoke holes with a rubber band.
  • Beak frame designed by an apprentice with a fetish for pipe bends and ikkle brackets
  • Front swing arm built heavier than the back swing arm because the shock absorber just HAS to match the vertical back shock.
  • All sorts od strange roller bearing sizes when polybushes would do the job at a fraction of the cost.
Sorry, I got carried away there.

Not so sure about that one - just look at all the KTM owners trying to make their conventionally spoked tubeless wheels hold air for more than 10 minutes...

To be honest, I'm dissapointed with my Akra headers. They just don't fit properly and won't fit snug against the outlet manifold. Every now and again I can get a rubber mallet and tap it further in, which makes me think there must be an air leak.

Goes and sounds great though.
