I'm considering decat ting the 1150. So my simple questions are what's the advantages, will I need to go down he dyno jet route and has anyone got a secondhand set of link pipes lying about or who's the cheapest to buy new from.

I'm slowly turning the 1150 into my perfect adventure bike:D she's now perfect in the seat to peg department, we have cruise control, silly bright lights and HIDs plus she's armoured in all the right places:thumb2 I have GSA shocks to go on once they've been reconned plus a nice new set of TKCs. I fancy the decat cos it should make her a little more pokey mid range plus the weight saving from lack of cat and end can should counter all the other crap I've added:blast

Who needs a new wassercooled techno jobbie:thumb

As you have said really.
Saves weight, better mid range and can sound better. No refuelling etc required. If you have access to a Y pipe then go for it.

I removed my cat from new. Not only is it a great weight saving, but it also allows easy access to the rear gear indicator switch and clutch slave cylinder.
I ran a little Techclusion box (R259 I think) to correct any fuelling issues, but latter replaced this with a booster plug for simplicity. Basically it just adds a bit more fuel. I used a Remus Y-Piece and Revolution silencer which was approved by bmw. Two weeks ago travelling through France I had plenty of spare time so stuck to 65-75mph and recorded a rather nice 57mpg.
Quite a few people seem to run different combinations, with the y-piece and standard end can seemingly popular. The extra noise of the Remus silencer puts some people off, but I love it :thumb.

Im away from my pc at the mo, but just google 'r1150gs booster' and it should be at the top of the search results. There is a cheaper version without the external resistor as well. It just plugs inline with the air box connector, 2 min job.

And how much is the booster plug and how easy are they to fit.

piece of wire with a spade connector at each end does the job , i beleive its one of steptoes tricks after he opened the wee box to see whats inside , ive a diagram some place i'll dig it out :)

I'm sorted for the y piece

Just need to find this booster thingy or do the step toe cheat if anyone has pics etc:D

The "cheat" is not Steptoe's, the box is no more than a link between two pins so I know who I think was doing the cheating in the price of the plug-in box.

Just search for it on here and you will find the pictures.

Heres the link for the Cat Code Plug: http://www.ukgser.com/forums/showthread.php?t=28293&highlight=code+plug

Heres the BoosterPlug:http://www.boosterplug.com/shop/boosterplug-bmw-r1150gs-180p.html

Heres the cheaper Accelerator:http://www.sol2.be/Performance/ENG/Home/index.html

Had my on a dyno years ago. It still ran a little lean with the Cat Code mod (tried different jumper pin configs). The Boosterplug and Accelerator add a little extra fuel by fooling the bike into thinking is colder than it actually is. Just a resistor really, but comes with the correct plugs so is easy to fit. Im sure the Boosterplug didnt cost that much when I got mine :nenau.

I did the 'Y' piece and after market Can (Blueflame) thing years ago but to be honest, it was too loud man!

It became wearing after a while so when I decided to go for a full sized pannier on the N/S to match the other one I went down this route...

Still saves a heap of weight and sounds good without ripping the eardrums apart...:thumb

Got the Booster thingy and a K&N filter, seems to do it's stuff quite well...

Mine came with K&N decat and Remus. I tried various options even bog standard where it pinked. I plumped for standard air filter, cat convertor and Remus can.
First thing I found with the cat back on was that the bike pulled better. I picked up a cheap used techlusion and had it set up on the dyno. It pushed out 77 at the rear wheel.

As others have said decat and can is very loud and gave me a headache after an hours riding. Cat and stubby is a good option too.

Do you

Still need to do steptoes mod if you fit an accelerator plug:nenau maybe a daft question but I'm trying to get my head round what the steptoe mod actually does.:nenau

I think the Steptoe mod selects a particular map (from the standard set) in the Motronic ECU. Might affect fuelling, spark timing or both. But I've never seen an explanation of what different maps are selected by what jumper options, or why some bike apparently come from the factory with different jumper setups? Maybe somebody will be along shortly to supply those details...

The accelerator plug merely makes the selected map run a little rich (the bike doesn't have a mass air sensor, so adjusts for different air density using a temperature sensor in the airbox; the add-on causes the Motronic to read a lower temperature so it adds a bit more fuel). Apparently this runs better than the factory setup (which will probably be tuned for emissions and to keep the cat happy).

So you might want to do both? Hard to be sure...

Keep the cat but cut the end of the standard silencer off and remove the baffle then re weld. Puts the back pressure where it should be for best torque.

The sounds perfect without being annoyingly loud and it's free :)

This is how I see it as well. I ended up using the cat code plug that came with the bike from new. It seems some have it, some don't etc. Maybe an appropriate plug was fitted at the factory? I used the boosterplug to add some more fuel as with the y-piece and remus revolution silencer it runs a little lean.
I also had a full remus race can that made the bike seem even more responsive. Never ran that on a Dyno, so it was only my perception. It would easily pick the front up off the throttle.
I guess at the end of the day adding a better breathing exhaust system will make the bike run leaner, so I cant see the harm in adding a little fuel.

Syco - I cut a 4 inch square hole in the top of my cat - Then got inside and cut the top off the internal Y piece, this lets the exhaust gas flow straight out in staed of going around the Cat converter do dah
I was told sometime somewhere that yer can get dodgy shit out of cutting the cat canister itself so by doing it this way yer leave it alone
Runs better than a Y piece, because as Tim says it lets the space act like a collector and smooth out the bangs = I think anyway :rob - Not a lot of increase in noise
Its SS so yer need Tig as well
Also by cutting the top Yer cant see where yerve been with the cutter welder

this image might help explain what the motoronic cat code plugs do?
