I've an '08 registered 800gs and after successful restarts 3 winters in a row, recently my battery was dead when going to restart after about 4 weeks of not being started (Travelling with work....)

Has anyone needed to replace their battery's after a similar number of years? I'd have thought 3 years is a bit early and should only need a bit of juicing in the garage but the dealer is saying it will probably need replacing.

Wanted to double check...

Cheers

I replaced mine after 2 years and 8 months. I think its quite early for a country with medium to high temperatures (and the fact that the bike is parked indoors at night).
One thing that contributed to this though is that for the past two months instead of the usual daily use, the bike was being used circa 2 times per week... (the bike was registered on March 2009)

Mine has been getting minimal use lately...

Its due new tyres and a pre-winter check up so will see what the dearler says...
Cheers

Fykka what is the quote for the new battery out of interest & cost of fitting? Someone will be along with a price to beat it no doubt.

I'd hope my battery of the same age see's me through till end of 2012
:D

Had a new one on mine last winter at just over two years old. Think the autocom drained it dead once, and that effectively shortens their life...

It's the way modern batteries go. One minute fine, the next fecked. Mine's an 08 on its original battery, and it isn't used every day, or even every week. However, I do keep it on the BMW charger when not in use.

My mate has the same bike, similar age. His is hardly used at all, he has no power to his garage, so no charger. Yet it always starts first time.

Will do - its going in on Monday so am due a call in advance from the dealer. likely that I have to chase them but will report back....

I also replaced my battery ... but I found that about only an hour on a brand new battery it's dead again. Bought another battery, same happened, until I realised my alternator was fried:

... been fine since my post above, but old battery was knackered and didn't hold charge, now using the new battery with new stator, no problems !
