I've got a 1Gb Hitachi microdrive that's been in my iPaq for a while. Today I removed it from the iPaq, put it in a Belkin multi memory thingy reader on the PC to copy some stuff, removed it when done, put it back in the iPaq and now it just makes feeble noises (like a very quiet air raid siren).

Tried it back in the PC - same result - just a faint squeek and it aint recognised.

Reading the Hitachi bumf it says not to use in any device without an eject button (neither PDA or Belkin reader have an eject button) and not to hold (squeeze) it other than by the sides - I must admit to pulling it out of the reader by gripping top and bottom and not the sides.

Dou you think it's knackered?

Having bought it SH from a mate some time ago I don't have any warranty on it.

If I put it back in it's case and leave it in a dark, quiet corner for a day or so, will it stop sulking and start working again?

Yep.
:(

Being an avid fiddler, I'd be checking if i could 'release' the sides a bit or jiggle it about to make it work, but it does sound like it's shagged, to use a technical term.

:(

Ah well,

at least now I can take it to bits and marvel at the mechanical wizardry inside.

Don't forget to post pics...we all like a bit of destruction of expensive toys ;)

On a serious note though, you can still recover data if you need to.

...................Naaa...shag it!!!!

:D :D :D

Actually, I should probably add that I know fekk all about microdrives apart from the basics.....I'm just guessing....but I still think it's shagged ;)

One of the reasons I was copying stuff off it was to clear space to do a test of a stripped down W2K installation on an industrial PC board - which has a CF card slot.

The microdrive is just TOO slow on the PDA using TomTom so I was thinking of a 1Gb CF Flash for the iPaq - I'll just have to get a couple now - and save money into the bargain.
