I have removed the collector box and replaced it with a Y-Piece on my PD

It is now blowing more freely - but as a result there is a rattle from the silencer - sounds like there is a loose baffle - I believe this is common ??

There is a patch repair on the inside of the silencer - which I was told was probably where there has been a repair to stop the loose baffle.

So before I look for a replacement silencer - is it worth trying to repair ?

And where is the best and cheepest place to locate a replacement ?

Thanks in advance guys :thumb2

They run much better with a collector box.

This is HPN's Mr Peppers comments -

we do not recommend a Y-pipe as to our Dyno-tests you loose a lot of midrange power

Funny , as if you go to the HPN site not many of the bikes have the standard collector.

I fitted a Y piece to my GS, and if anything it improved the mid range.

I had a rattle on the muffler too - turned out it was a blob of melted aluminum - the gaskets between the header sections eventually disintegrate and they must end up somewhere. The baffle at the rear of the muffler is not continuously fixed at perimeter, and I was able to turn down an inch or two and get the offending item out. Resulted in a ,err, pleasing burble to the exhaust note and didnt harm power either, but the lump of aluminum in the guts of the silencer probably wasn't helping things .

FWIW my 1000cc G/S still has the small 800cc collector and it runs splendidly, although according to the experts that shouldn't work either.

Just like the unequal length 2 into one on my 75/7.

So take what the experts say with a pinch of salt, your experience may differ.

The liberated contents of mine so far. If you want to remove the loose bits I recommend -a long flexible torch, extendable magnetic pick up tool and previous experience as a proctologist :D

Given how rattly it still is I will be warning others that if they ride too close behind me they run the risk of being shot  :D
