Are we meant to disclose headlight guards, tank bags, topboxes etc on our insurance?

Never really modified a car but just curious what others have done - I was going to give Bikesure a ring but ran out of time today..

Yes

should help

useful

I would rarely have a modification unless it was on the bike at time of purchase

An accessory is only worth declaring if you would want to be recompensed for it if the bike is stolen or damaged e.g. a £1500 set of BMW luggage. I don't declare my 30 year old Givi topbox as it is worth fuck all.

If you check the Bikesure site it covers most things as standard. Really, so long as it is not a power mod or expensive it's probably included.

I added/declared my luggage (£1500) & light (£500) and it cost nothing extra.

Yeah I'm not doing performance. Only the big ticket items I want to list.

So just rang Bikesure and I've been told as long as it's not performance mods, I won't be charged for any adjustment to list the accessories. It also doesn't affect the excess or anything as such.

But rather check with your insurance - might be case by case basis.

Agreed - but I have never modified a car so this is all new to me. Just wanted to share that if you have any mods on your bike, declare them!

Rather safe then sorry :)

There's also the argument, the more interesting or fancy the bike looks, over standard, the more likely it is to be pinched?

What about the one with more fuel in the tank?
Or the cleaner on? Shinier attracts more attention.

Surely there will be a "limit" to where the risk is defined for insurers while keeping everyone sane.

Yes it’s a good idea.

Some are classed as ‘accessories’ and some are classed as ‘modifications’.
I told the last insurance bod about everything non-standard on my bike and he said some wouldn’t affect the premium ( apart from the fact that they raised the bike’s value and may have a minor effect on the premium) and he was more concerned with stuff that was deemed to improve the performance and possibly adversely affect the inherent safety of the vehicle done by owners who think they know better than the manufacturer (17 inch wheel on a GS anyone..?) … modified ecu ( Hilltop anyone?), exhausts and mods to wheels, braking systems, the list goes on.

Also be aware that the list of stuff you declare on the comparison sites doesn’t necessarily transfer across to the insurance company and may not appear on their system or your paperwork.

I’m not sure about that. If the insurer deems it’s a higher risk because of the accessory they may charge you more. For example, a bike with luggage may be more likely to be nicked than a bike without. I’d declare everything and then there’s no comeback

have you read the article from Devitt about the different treatment of accessories and modifications? If you have, you might want to ask someone to explain it to you.
An accessory with a zero value has no impact on the premium.
