Definitive answer please! Spacer yay or nay?

My 96 850R has a spacer.. non abs

It may be an attempt by BMW to make the bikes track straight hands off bars. My '03 1150GS servo abs did have a spacer but still tracked to one side hands off unless leant over quite substantially.
