Device registration problems

Does anyone know how I register a device with Garmin so I can update maps and software etc?

I have recently purchased a Nav VI, I’ve created an account on the Garmin website but cannot find an option to add a device.

When I click on products in my account I get the message “No devices registered to your account” but I cannot find an option to add a device.

Any clues 🤷‍♂️
 

How do I update the map material for the Navigator VI?​

To update the map data for your Navigator VI, install the "Garmin Express" software on your computer. Here you will find all information on installing the program from point "1. Install Garmin Express":
Among other things, you will find installation instructions and information on how to update the maps on your device. Simply connect your Navigator VI to your computer (via USB cable), start the "Garmin Express" program and follow the instructions for the map update.
With the map update, you will also update the retailer data of the BMW Motorrad locations.

"Garmin Express" is available for PC / MAC.

Done all that, nothing comes up, device is charged and connected via cable, downloaded latest Garmin Express, nothing happens, tried creating an account and still nothing happens. I’m guessing it’s not seeing the device but comes up as connected on the PC (MAC) but nothing shows in Garmin Express.

Suggest you try a different cable.
Only my "genuine" Garmin allows a proper connect. All the others just charge the device which is what shows up on the computer.
 
Are you using a Mac?

Mac’s can sometimes be fussy about ‘seeing’ Garmin devices. Some recommend running the device through a hub, whatever that is or, not connecting via a hub. Opinions vary, as they do with many things.

Try Google: Mac will not see my Garmin or some such words.
 
Ah - the old my Mac isn't seeing my Garmin issue eh?

All I can say is that in my own case five things make a difference:
1. Some USB cables do work. Some USB cables don't work.
2. Direct connection to the Mac is best. Some hubs do work. Some hubs don't work.
3. Some cables that work with one hub, don't work with another hub.
4. The the SD card out. I know you my need it for map updates or your routes but for registration you don't and it speeds up the connection process.
5. Patience. Leave it connected and go make a cup of tea (or two, to three). Even leave it overnight.

If it's not connected at the end of all that, it's probably not going to work. However, I have never had a complete failure...

One last thing - do the two drives (Garmin unit and the SD card show on the Mac's Home Screen?
 
Is this Nav VI new or previously loved?

If previously loved, I guess (and this is a real guess) that the former owner might not have de-registered it. To guess a bit more, that might block any attempt to re-register it. But I could be miles out.

Is the device fully live? For some odd reason, some devices need to be fired up on a motorbike before becoming active. My XT (a different device, I admit) did.
 
Unit is a new replacement from Garmin so assuming it’s not been registered, but not managed to get to the point of it being recognised by the MAC to see.

Interesting thought ref it being on the bike, I’ve not fitted it yet, I was wanting to update to current software and maps first.

Nav 6 doesn't have to be started up on the bike - or at least not in my experience of the three I've had.

You say it's not recognised by the Mac bit earlier you said the Mac can see both the Nav6 internal drive and its SD card and shows them on your Home Screen. Which is it? Mac can't see them or Mac can see them but Garmin Express can't?

If it's the former, I'm afraid it's a cable/hub experimentation session.

If it's the latter, first thing I'd do is reboot the Mac. If that fails, I'd reinstall Garmin Express.

Oh - and as per my earlier question, can BaseCamp see the Nav6 or not?
 
MAC can see it so I’m assuming Garmin Express can’t. Not tried it with Base Camp as I’d given up by then. I’ll try it all again tomorrow and see how I get on.

I don't think there is a need to register a device with Garmin to get map updates. The Lifetime Map thing is hard coded into a device which is what Garmin Express seeks when you want an update. Registering for warranty purposes is a different matter.

I read the opening post as an inability to register the device, with the map / software updates coming second?

Is there no one locally that you can use their computer to download GE and try connecting? You can always uninstall it afterwards.
 
So my understanding was it had to be registered first for updates🤷‍♂️ Eitherway it’s not seeing it, I think the problem may also be my internet connection is less than 1mb and the web site states high speed connection required, I thought it should still work but just take longer.

Think as suggested, I’ll try it at someone else’s house who has a PC as opposed to a MAC and a decent internet connection.
