Just back from a fabulous few days in Devon

Not been down in a long time and it was so good to see my very good friends again, from my formative years (40 years ago) and spend quality with them all

Sightseeing/chatting/walking on Dartmoor/reminiscing/summer party/swimming @ Budleigh/Sidmouth Folk festival & chilling out in familiar places with familiar people

I had forgotten how stunning Babbacombe & Maidencombe, Dartmoor, Dartmouth, Teignmouth/Shaldon and then East Devon - Woodbury Common & Sidmouth area, plus East Budleigh today

Went in the car and not bike - but made for an equally enjoyable trip and ‘enjoyed the freedom from not wearing bike gear’

When one looks at Britain objectively ,,,,,, it’s no wonder the Romans threw up a wall across the place .
North of it = rain , cold , Midgies , and savages

South - some beautiful areas and in Devon this week with temps of 25-32c you could mistake it for south of France in Torquay/Teignmouth and Dartmouth (lots of French spoken on the street from visiting French leisure sailors in their yachts)

The sea vistas are very similar

Spent many a happy summer holiday as a kid around that area (staying mainly in Maidencombe in a farm cottage...booked via pen and ink the previous winter after answering an ad in some paper or periodical, no doubt)
Much later to find out that my ancestors on dads side of the family came from Brixham (1700s -1840) and Black Torrington (1540s onwards)

Great stuff - didn’t know you had some Devonian blood

Beach at Maidencombe is just lovely and some old friends just live a small distance away - so we spent a bit of time over there this week

The Devon side of the family were the 'Knights', we think my current surname appeared in mid 1700s, perhaps from Belgium but can't seem to get further. Many seem to just think of their birth surname as their ancestral family but obviously the number of surnames doubles with each generation so only 200 years ago there'd be 64 or 128 seperate surnames in the mix...fascinating stuff. My lot left Devon in a hurry in 1840...after one of 'em was released after his 9mths in pokey for larceny......

Not all of them! Youll see some sights in The Foot o the Walk! So I’m told! The main attraction of drinking in Leith used to be later hours. The Boundary Bar straddled the boundary and you could carry on boozing by moving to the Leith end of the bar! No longer. The bar is still there but licensing hours are so last century!

Have to keep my head down in these parts as I always put the cream on first
Just need to swap out those pebble beaches for the miles of sand and proper surfing waves here in north Cornwall

Glad the weather made it all the better for this return

Door to door it’s 5.5-6 hours with a 30 min stop for the 320 miles

Clotted Cream on first ….‘it’s the Devon way ….with do the Cornish know anyhow

Cornish pasties are alright but they know nothing about Cream Teas

The North Devon coast is pretty spectacular: Welcome Mouth Beach, Hartland Quay, Hartland Point, Clovelly, Bucks Mills, Westward Ho, Saunton, Croyde, Woolacombe, Combe Martin, then the Toll Road to Lynton, Lynmouth and the coast road along the edge of Exmoor to Porlock: all really spectacular and much less touristy and developed than the South Coast. But keep it to yourself, we don't want too many grockles this end

Well I won’t argue about the cream teas but if you are ever around the Welcombe area and want to treat someone special to an outstanding full on afternoon tea experience try the Rectory tea rooms in Morwenstow
Not cheap and you’ll need to book 24hrs ahead for them to prepare all the pastries but something you won’t forget
(or digest) in a hurry ️
