Excuse my ignorance, all new to me.

Do I have to use a dedicated BMW device like a GS-911 to talk to my 2014 R1200GS or are other ones available?

Can I not use one that will also do the cars in the household too?

Thanks.

No. is the short answer. The Gs-911 can help you to unlock and access BMW systems, but is not the only tool that can reset service data and read codes. And is Bike specific only.

The Moto Scan (app) can read codes, reset service data and do other coding functions too. Relatively cheap for the pro version, and will need a bluetooth LX(?) OBD dongle.

You can use the OBD dongle to use other apps for your Cars, as i do (Torque, Bimmertool, Bimmer code).

Thanks. So is there anything the GS-911 does that I can't get elsewhere ?

For day-to-day maintenance, no. For more in-depth functions, yes. But those are more 'once in a blue moon' situations.

The advantage it does have over the likes of Motoscan, is it does not need internet communications to function. Something to be mindful of, if taking it on tour.

Loads. What do you want it for and how much are you prepared to spend?
I have motoscan as I had the OBD and only want to clear basic codes and will not programme anything.

Dunno. I think I need to calibrate the throttle position etc for example.

Look at the old mechanic channel on YouTube.
He has ome excellent tutorial videos for motoscan.

Motoscan can do this (I've done it on mine) and more. The GS-911 can definitely do more but is appreciably more money, especially if you don't need the bells & whistles that it offers. Plus as @DJ123 states with the Motoscan you can use the OBD reader on other vehicles.
