Myself and a mate are planning to ride to cape town next year or the year after and we need two bikes for lots of other traveling that's on the cards. The classic debate of "which bike" was discussed in another thread but I factored it down to something that was cheap and simple, something like a KL250.

Which ever bikes we get - I'll be fabricating an aluminum shell comprising of a tank, luggage and dakar style fairing.

Then I found this and I'm thinking why not. :D

depends on the terrain

it sounds like a good plan to diesel it, but it depends what you expect the littlr yanmar to acheive,pulling a lard arse tosser and luggage off road could be a tall order, but a toothbrush, tent, and sleeping bag approach may work on road.or just turbo the bugger.
 
We use that little Yanmar diesel in the water pump on the lifeboat and it's very reliable....but quite small in terms of horses.....and you can start it on a handpull!

I think it's going to happen. Engines are on ebay for £460 but hoping to get one cheaper.

Here's one that's been converted
 
0-60 time is about 25 seconds but it won't do 100kph in strong wind or up a hill. :D

* Do I buy an enfield and fit new suspension? Expensive option and bike will be heavy.

* Buy a larger dirtbike, modify the frame and fit the enfield gearbox.
 
This is even more ludicrous than the Husky or the WR250 idea..

No you can't. The company was promising the KLX's for years and it's still ongoing. First mass produced diesel bike that's reasonably priced will be massive.

Another find, the L100 that will power whatever it is I make will do approx 200mpg.

Africa and long distance traveling is looking cheaper all the time.

Looking for a good quality 250cc bike, prob Honda, needs to have good suspension, steel frame (for cut n weld) and ideally a blown engine.
 
I wouldn`t be arsed with the diesel option.

My Royal Enfield Electra X Woodsman 500 returns 107mpg while travelling at a smidge under 60mph with camping gear on it....why go for the oily slug diesel ?

I guess the vaguely serious answer would be that diesel can sometimes be easier to obtain than petrol in that there 'dark continent'.........not really an issue though...................

The main reason has to be the sport it'll give us watching Snoops trying to sort out and prep a diesel bike and ride it there :D

Offer of £250 made on a 1990 Honda XL 250R :D. It's a heap but the wheels (18/21), frame (steel tubing) and suspension (cartridge, long travel) are fine and that's all that matters.

Engine located for £264 delivered.

Need an Enfield 5-speed gearbox then the project starts.
