Anyone have any experience of the combined diode board & rectifiers?

My regulator is u/s and I thought of replacing it with a combined unit that mounts outside the motor.

Enduralast sell one, as does bmwboxersupplies

I know that you loose your charge light but thats easy enough to fix with a small, digital voltmeter.

Anyone:nenau

Not fitted yet but would be on the back of the battary tray. They are preparing a quote for a permanent magnet type of alternator, so I am waiting to see the cost of that before I proceed.

Best prices I've seen:clap Thanks!

Have you fitted one? Where? Don't like Thunders mounting place;)

John

Ah well it's got to be in a position to lose the heat and under the tank is not an option IMPO (especially with a twin coil installation :augie).

Enduralast recommend fitting on the right side but on the Storm with it's custom sub frame it was not possible hence it went on the right with a bracket that we made up.

Fitting here provides maximum air flow to handle heat dissipation ( particularly important with the alternator upgrade fitted) and in the unlikely event of a problem with the unit makes it simple to fit a replacement.

As for the complete system itself, it's "les testicules de chiens" :thumb2

Isn't Tiffs bike bog standard ?? You know, the girl who's rode her airhead around the world a couple of times and is now in mongolia :augie

Neil,

Bling fests are similar to shark feeding frenzies, I've learnt it's impossible to stop one once it starts. You have to just stand back until it's all over and then provide counselling to whoever's still standing..

I'd say adding bling is the missionary act - riding one around the world is the exciting bit. :D

And she uses the bmw standard plastic panniers and an old plastic despatch riders top box. Esoteric bling.

Too right!:thumb2

Yeah, but apart from them looking shite, IMPO of course, anything that can be done better or perhaps more reliably, is great.
I did choose the GS for it's simplicity, but it can be made so much better than the standard item in so many ways and being a "fiddler", I like that.

Anyway, it gives you something to read on a boring Sunday in between MotoGP and the rugby:)

The reg/rec units shown in the endurast and boxersupplies pages look like the electrex rr45 which are for the airheads. I had one on my bike but took it off just last week as we couldn't keep the volts under 14.9. This was the second one I've had on there as the first also ran at about the same. A bloke over here was using one on an airhead in the OZ safari and cooked 3 batteries with that set up, thats when we got them all replaced but they have been no better so have gone with a honda reg/rec unit. By the way that bike of mine I posted in hot airheads has a twin plugged 100 engine. 100mm extended twin spar swingarm with single wp shock, 33/11 diff. 45mm marzocchi front with a 320mm floating disc and 4 pot billet caliper. fully braced frame with 300mm travel front and rear, great machine :thumb

i have had one of these reg rect fitted for a little over 18months. not had any trouble with it so far. it is fitted behind the right side pannel and the bike has a pc680 (in standard battery tray) i dont use the bike much, only most days for a minimum 150 mile commute :D

Hi bumpmuncher, that's good to hear, do you have a volt meter and know the volts yours is putting into the battery. I've a volt meter wired to the ign which was reading about 14.75v but when wired directly to the battery was reading 14.95v, no good. Cheers Pete

Just in case anyone else is looking for replacement rectifiers/regulators, I found another option at edknet.de

Second one down in that link. Fits in the motor and is a rec/reg combined... €82 + p&p
