My Disc drive isn't opening, and the weird thing is that when I go to 'My computer', there is no sign of a Disc drive in the Devices with Removable Storage section, only my 31/2 Floppy(A)

Does that mean that the computer isn't seeing my Disc drive?

If so, then why not? The drive is physically there, I mean it hasn't gone away without my noticing.

So what's occurring?

Do a quick google search, you might have to edit the registry, I did the same for my mums pc last week with the same problem. Cant remember where i found the answer but had to delete a line in the registry.

Have you recently added some new software ?

Oh dear, you're making me nervous- what's a registry? What term should I Google? I'm pretty clueless with this sort of thing, could I screw my computer up if I did something wrong?

New software: I may have added something in the past month or so but I don't think it was anything to do with a disc drive. I've had a look through Start > All Programs but I can't recognise any as being new/recent.

Or quite simply the power or data lead has come adrift from the motherboard/drive. It can happen even after years of undisturbed service.

Device manager

If you right click on 'my computer' and go to properties/device manager...does it show in the list?..might be worth right clicking on it/uninstall it, then go actions/scan for hardware changes to bring it back:nenau

I can understand your concern if you can only see your 3.5" floppy

But, GENERALLY speaking, Window$ uses generic drivers to detect and load your disc drives. It may be that the driver for your CD-ROM/DVD drive is corrupted. You ought to be able to Google for the answer and remedy, or perhaps Google your motherboard manufacturer.

Congratulations longdog... you have successfully reposted the link I posted 2 days ago :D

I would like to say I would bet my house on it being a registry issue (due to the amount of times I have fixed this problem)... but I don't own a house :P

I'm so flattered at the praise poured on me by your good self. May I have the honour of kissing the hem of your gown? :augie
