Disc Warp!

Well my bike is 2.5 years old with 12K on the clocks. BMW replaced a rear disc about a year a ago after I reported what seemed like a warped discs surging when braking. Well I'm getting same experience again and it seems like front discs maybe warped but I don't know cause I thought it was front discs last time!

My question is, is this normal for such a young bike? Is this a known problem?

My '09 bike did it after about a year and not a high mileage. Just one of the front discs on mine, and not because I'm heavy on the brakes either. I think it's quite well reported on here.

My 07 1200 GS did the same at 18k, surgeing and really confusing the ABS and the nice bMW man says that whilst it is warped it is within limits.

Very common, at least with older models. I have an 07 GSA and had front and rear rotors replaced under warranty (in the US) within 7k miles.

Did a long ride today and it def feels like front discs? Worse when braking in traffic or slowing at junctions and lights!

I am on my third set of front discs in 20,000 miles. All under warranty.

06 GSA, and I'm not hard on the brakes. In fact I try to avoid using them and maintain progress on the old tractor

I think its because they are not a floating disc design and the fat old bavarian bird takes a bit of stopping!

I'm sure there is someone from BMW on the site that will provide an answer.

Had my brakes checked by BMW today and they confirmed it was the rear disc again! Not sure why the rear disc keeps going, I'm not hard on the brakes because the brakes are very good generally - best brakes on a bike yet, but discs should last longer than 1.5 years imo. BMW dealer seeing if they can get a good will gesture made for me!

My front brake, when applied at low speed make the bikes like a fecking bucking bronco, seen this post yesterday so nipped down to the local BMW dealer and he said he will replace the pads and 2 front disks, my bike is only 18 months old with 12k on the clock, classy German quality, not

Mine feels like that but I've been told it's rear disc not front!

the dealer said he is going to take the bike in and check the warp on all the disks, it is really shite quality

At first glance I totaly agree, disc warping at low mileage is rubbish! BUT I think the weight of the bike must have something to do with it! Ever tried picking one up with a full tank? Just think of the power in the brakes to stop you when you use them!

However, they should be made stronger I agree!

My back one is slightly warped ive noticed recently , ive changed the front ones because of the same probs ,time to do the back now i suppose

Are they expensive to do?

yeah about 70 + pads as degsey says , i done them on my last bike aswell not to bad to do , just a little fiddly getting the torx bit on perfect under the final drive unit to undo the disc bolts but no big deal

The bmw ones was alot dearer , so went for a good quality aftermarkets in the end and they done the job fine no probs as yet

just changed the back one at 15k and it also had a 2nd BMW one with a previous owner before i had it, so would suggest that maybe they are not v good

£70 from James Sherlock plus new bolts and pads makes it about £100, BMW want about £200 for disc and labour alone

would suggest that the rear binds up and overheats the disc thru lack of use and corrosion and its a great big heat sink on the diff an all

strip it yearly at least, only takes 20 mins if you the right torx tools
