Discounted Group Buy - Mudsling Alternative

I thought the normal way was to start with a unique offering and maintain good margins over production costs to recoup R&D costs quickly.

Over time prices normally fall, once a product has been designed and tooling made the actual "gate" price is pretty low, the "copiers" still have to do a bit of testing and get tooling so have some "R&D" and tooling costs.

Most manufacturers reduce costs, bring more customers to the market and therefore can survive with more sales at lower margins. Nobody ever has an exclusive product forever.

If Panasonic decided to keep the cost of Plasma TV's at £5k because they were first to market them where would they be now? - It is an easy one - Bankrupt.

You cannot charge 2,3 or 4 times as much for an almost identical product than your competitors and expect people to buy your product, if you reckon it is better designed etc. and with good reputation, brand awareness etc. at best I would expect a 20% premium.

The exception to this rule seems to be in the world of fashion where people will buy a T-Shirt that cost £2 to produce for £45 because of the name on the label - unfortunately for you these people do not buy too many mudslings.

OK Here we go, 'as they say in America'

The Splash Guards have been paid for and will be shipped on Monday. I expect to hear from the Customs guys on Thursday or Friday, then I'm guessing they will arrive here the following Monday or Tuesday.

Thanks to all who have helped get this thing off the ground, your support is much appreciated :bow

Cheers Val.

Not quite you haven't. I will have a few extras. I'll put you on the list and contact you and those already on it when I know what the propper price will be. Probably in about a week.

Why does a MudSling cost what it does, or any product for that matter? Certainly the material can't cost
more than a few pence you may say. I hear this often enough to warrant a brief education about what it
takes to bring any product to market.

The price of a product reflects the cost of many things unseen by the consumer: the months it took to
conceive of and develop it, the trial and error of multiple prototypes made in the course of getting it to fit
and look right; the cost of tooling and parts moulding. Add to that the cost of fasteners, product
identification, instructions design, packaging, advertising, and the cost of transport from the factory to
distributors plus local taxes. The price you pay factors in all of that plus a reasonable profit margin for distributors
that handle sales in markets such as Europe, and the profit we need to make in order for the effort to have been
worthwhile in the first place.

In short, GS riders derive a value from the design of the MudSling because it solves a problem identified
by thousands of riders - the need to protect suspension and surrounding components from mud and rock
soiling and damage. What you pay for the product is not the material from which it is formed, but the
problem solving creativity and the months of effort spent by many people all along the development,
production, and distribution process to bring the product to market and, eventually, to you and your GS.
That, mates, is worth a lot more than a few pence.

When you buy a MudSling, feel good about supporting the company that brought it to you and know that it
helps foster new products from which you may benefit in the future.

In Europe, our products are distributed by Nippy Normans in the UK www.nippynormans.com.

Hello Val,
I have just read through your thread with interest.
Do you still have the "one left" to fit a 2010 GSA with ESA? If so I'd be pleased to buy it.
Have contacted you by pm :thumb

Well I've now promised all of the 1200GS Splash guards. So in theory I'm sold out. Looks like I'll have to place another order. I do still have some to fit the 650/800.

I Just checked the tracking of the packages and they are all safely in the UK. They just need to pass through Customs and then be delivered to me.

Watch this space.
