Have a 1994 R1100GS, 81,000miles. In good nick and I look after her, serviced at local motorcycle specialist. After the bikes warmed up, when I disengage the clutch to idle in neutral, I have a pronounced knocking. It's been like this for a while. Pull in clutch lever and the knocking stops. No clutch slippage. It's obviously clutch related. Do I live with it and see if it worsens? Is this indicative of clutch almost worn out? Have I missed something? Thoughts?

It's not the thrust bearing.
A failing or failed thrust bearing will make a noise, usually a screeching noise when the clutch lever is pulled in and the bearing is under load.

The other thrust bearing failure symptom is constant and rapid lack of play in the gearbox clutch arm.

Aha. Usually a screeching noise - but can a thrust bearing problem make a dunk-dunk-dunk noise, when the clutch lever is pulled in?
How big a problem is this to fix? Mine started doing this last summer... The hotter it got the louder it got :-(

Probably just a rattle.Mine does it but I fixed it with earplugs.Pop over if you want me t have a look at it,I'm just south of Chester on the A41:beerjug:

Just a tuppence worth from my last experience - I had a 'dunk dunk dunk' noise but silence when clutch lever pulled - I loosened starter motor and put one bolt in - started engine then removed the starter - you can see the clutch plate and gearbox spline - when I pulled clutch lever the spline stopped spinning and noise stopped - when clutch engaged again the shaft visibly moved - gearbox main shaft bearing failure/failing

But it could be just a usual noise!

When the leaver is at rest meaning not pulled in there is a slight knock....when the lever is pulled in this usually disappears ... I believe its a normal noise... my 850 has been like this for the last 40k kms

Northern Monkey & Drino,

Cheers for that. Mine does its unwelcome 'donking' when the clutch lever is pulled in to the handlebar. I'll let it develop a bit and see what happens. If it's serious, I'll hand it over to a pro to fix.

Taliban Bob,

Apologies for the thread hijack. And it's always worth the trip to see Vern. Bring biscuits!

I will pop over sometime, perhaps when it get's a little warmer. Icy patches here in the foothills of Snowdonia still! The clack, clack, clack, clack noise, when clutch disengaged has been around for ages, more pronounced when the bike has fully warmed up. Doesn't seem to affect the bike in any way whatsoever. Got it serviced by Richard in Ruthin, (Moto GP I think it's called) last Aug, the mechanic there said it was the clutch - see how it goes. As I say no slippage on the clutch and for an antique GS with 80k on the clock, she's still a looker and runs well.
