Mornin'.
At last night's BMWMCCVIC meeting a bloke showed up with a gleaming black (second fastest colour) 1150R, from which he had removed the muffler, and had replaced same with a $9.95 chrome-plated slash-cut exhaust tip. The exhaust therefore terminated at about the front(ish) of his rear wheel.
The increase in volume was absolutely negligible, in stark contrast to the reduction in weight.
Why are we running mufflers at all ? Is there legislation requiring this ? Does the exhaust need to finish behind the rear of the bike, as is the case with cars here in Oz, where it must exit behind the passenger cabin ?
I don't see how the removal of the muffler would compromise the engine's efficiency.
Looks like there might be a little experimentin' this w/e ........
