Would it be an idea to have a separate subsection for the DMD device, which seems to be gathering a following in some quarters?

I still need to have a tidy-up of the GPS section at some point. However, creating something for the DMD device could, I guess, be done now.

Maybe a good idea.
I run a rugged android mini tablet with the free DMD software on it, rather than pay £800 for a dedicated DMD device.
It’s really very good when riding off road, especially with the latest update.
A little tricky to get your head round it on first use compared to a traditional sat nav but excellent bit of kit.

Thank you.

If I understand you correctly, there’s two strands to DMD:

1. A dedicated DMD device, running DMD’s own app.

2. A separate DMD app that can be run on say, a tablet.

Is that correct? Anything else?

Thank you.

That’s correct, but really it could all run under one heading as the software is all the same whether it’s a dmd device or a generic android device.

Similar to MRA, there’s a web based route planner called DMD Hub, and an app called DMD2 which runs on the device an has a route planner.

It would be helpful to have a separate section

So to contradict myself maybe a section for DMD Hub (there’s a free version) and another for the DMD2 app?

Thanks for the input, appreciated.

I think it’s agreed that DMD warrants its own subsection. I’m just a bit unsure whether (as with MyRoute’s two separate sections for MyRoute’s Routeplanner and Navigation app) DMD needs to be split and, if so, what to call each.

If the main users of DMD could agree between them what makes the most sense, I’ll see what I can do to get it all created.

IMHO the app and hub are part of the thing.
The only reason the Jaoa has done a separate “Hub” app is to cover users with IOS. There isn’t one in android as it’s built into the main app.
The online part is very much like here in that there’s the community element, services, etc.
The planner works the same whether you’re in the app or online

there seem to be 3 elements to DMD
DMD hardware that comes with the full fat version of their software. The DMD hardware is also an Android tablet that can install other apps from the Play store such as weather, hotel booking, Wordle, gaydar etc.

a route planner that can be run from a web browser or app

a standalone navigation app that can be run on an Android device with a free version and a full fat version by subscription

obviously there will be a crossover as those using the free app on a Samsung phone might also use a web browser to plan just like a DMD device owner.

do these need sub-folders or will one DMD folder be sufficient? I would suggest the latter.

There is no operating difference between a Samsung(or other make) tablet and the Thork ones as they all run android other than the Thork ones are not full of bloatware.
Physically they are as the Thork are fully ruggedised with specific connections, etc.
Anything to do other that side is easily answered on their own pages so one section for the software side of things here is adequate.

Yes, as I said when Richard originally asked, my only query was whether there should be a section for the DMD2 app and another for the Hub route planner- the rational being that the Hub route planner could be used by anyone, including those not using DMD2.

Agreed no need to split out Thork and non-thork devices, the only difference is what level of subscription you have- same as MRA

no, but I have a 9 year old Zumo 390 that will need to be replaced in due course so the various options are of interest and under scrutiny

DMD seems to be well regarded but their hardware is prohibitively expensive for an Android tablet. Using their app on another device might be an option.

The free version of the software allows you to do a lot of things and get the feel of it should you want to subscribe for a device or purchase a one of the DMD devices. I only have Ireland downloaded at the moment for evaluation purposes and there are a couple of things that I have found that it does so far which is not really the forte of My Route app. Mainly the way poi's are handled and the ability to manipulate tracks

At the moment I run Android Auto to my Honda Africa twin screen via a wireless dongle fitted to the screens USB input. My phone stays in my pocket and if necessary I have a small 10,000mah Anker power bank which gives me more than a days ride of use from the phone and I can recharge my pack and phone at my accomodation. The phone stays charged if I connect the phone directly to the bike via the USB socket, but it stopped working last year when I was Touring Scotland during "Storm Amy" when water got into the phone charging socket :D

One of the positive things about AA/CP devices is that you can switch between apps. Because I can control this using the bar buttons on my bike I have been experimenting with switching from my main navigation apps MRA or OSMand+ on tour and using Google maps to find casual stops along a route. Google maps is also linked to Gemini so with your bluetooth headset you can ask it to route you to a coffee stop or Lunch stop with a Google Rating of >4.5 (or whatever) in a town or a road (preferably on your route). This has worked well and you can rejoin your route when you switch back to your navigation app.

Why am I looking at DMD? I'm thinking of downsizing the bike and will lose the built in AA screen. It's good on the Honda as you can control the apps with the bikes Left hand switch cluster (much criticised by bike testers). Other than that I'm not a fan of screen mirroring devices as they introduce another potential point of failure between your phone and what you can see. I think a separate dedicated device is likely to be more reliable.

DMD is not only a navigation app but also a boot screen for AA devices. I have a phone set up like this.

So on a very good rugged AA device such as those sold by DMD and others, or on a cheaper device you can have access to DMD navigation, your other apps and things like OBD2 data from your motorcycle. Combined with a set of bar buttons to control the screen it would make a very comprehensive set up.

I have no idea what a dmd is so I guess a separate section where I can steer clear sounds like a good idea

I just googled it. It's a fancy satnav for off-roading, really. And it's Android, so of no use to the Apple cohort. Another section to avoid.

No, it isn’t. I’ve just bought one, to replace a Montana. The new Montana is £769.99 plus £84.99 for the powered mount, so £855. I paid just over £900 for the new Nor7e including the mount.

I’ve tried with armoured Android devices and for me they are all compromised. I want a dedicated sat nav with proper power connectors, that comes loaded with nav software and has global mapping included.

I understand it may not be for you. Your statement should read “in my opinion and for my use they are too expensive”.

But as you are still using a 10 year old 2nd tier Garmin I’d say you don’t really know.

thankyou for your patronising post exhibiting your consistency with self righteous pomposity in this place

You are welcome. It’s as relevant as you commenting in a section for a device you don’t use and dismissing out of hand for being too expensive.
