Guys and/or gals,

I really need help here.
My R1200GS is coming up to 16 months old and for the last 10 months I've had a constant electrical problem. It's let me down on holiday, going to work and left me stranded. I get the same click, click, click noise. It's been into different dealers about 8 times now to try to sort out this problem and I went out to try and start it again and the problems still there. My problem is the Prestige, where I bought the bike, have tried to wash their hands of it as they are no longer a BMW dealer. They have told me it's BMW UK i need to contact. So, I contacted BMW UK and they said it was nothing to do with them. I told them this was my third BMW and that I wanted their help to sort out something, ie. a replacement bike or something as the BMW dealer told me that my bike was probably a 'Friday afternoon' bike. BMW UK didn't seem at all bothered that they might lose a customer forever and turned their backs on me.

I was so pleased to see this thread because it seems as if this click, click, click electrical problem isn't an isolated incident. I am really worried what will happen when my waranty runs out and feel very alone in my dealings with BMW. I have contacted a lawyer who says he's willing to take my case but I don't really want it to go that far- surely BMW should provide help.

Could anyone who's got any advice please reply. I would be very grateful.

Don't fret mate, you have a good case for sure. Write to BMW direct, send the letter Registered post and tell them once again about the problems you have experienced. Give them the opportunity to put it right, but put a timescale on receiving a reply from them. Important also to tell them that in the event of not getting satisfaction you will instruct your solicitor, and cc the letter to your solicitor. Don't be put off legal action, these people need to see that you are determined though or you will just be fobbed off, you need to have the appetite for it. I had a claim against Lloyds bank once, and one of their managers told me I had absolutely no chance of getting any compensation. 3 months later, £3000 into my account.

If it was me, I would also contact Citizens Advice Bureau and Trading Standards for advice.

Best of luck.

John

Do they care???

Probably not. To be honest they are a shower of shit when it comes to customer service, unfortunatly for us they make GS's so we have to deal with them.

What do you mean by click, click? do you mean the relay engages but the starter motor doesn't turn? or is it clicking while you ride the bike.

click click- no start
by the way thanks for your support - i am writing a letter now

Get the solicitor on Prestige's case asap, might get them to pay a bit more attention.

Your contract with Prestige to provide a decent bike still stands, whether or not they still have a contract with BMW. If they can't sort your problem out, get the solicitor to claim the purchase price back from Prestige. You won't get it, but you might get an offer of compensation if you can make a good claim out. Marketable goods and all that, s.14 of the Sale of Goods Act 1979 requires satisfactory quality and fitness for purpose.

You do not have a contract with BMW, so its very much harder to get anywhere with them, unless you can bring some action based on an EU directive about warranties.

I wouldn't dick about writing letters that are going to go in the BMW bin, were I you.

Good luck!

I don't think that they do care once you've bought the bike. They don't deserve us.

Go try and buy Honda. Remember Honda have a new Trailie out next year....

Sorry Proff, I can't help it you're the mug who wants to defend his purchase. Take your rose tinted specs off.

BMW customer service, isn't really, they deal with complaints about individual dealers, but not with the customer, your contract is with the shop you purchased the bike from, if the bike is still under warrantee just take it to another BMW dealer, as your warrantee is with BMW, any of their agents (dealers) are empowered to do the work :nenau

Find one that will listen, be nice and polite tell him your problem and it should be sorted, if the fault persists keep with the same dealer untill its sorted, i would try NOG or SPC both seem keen most of the time :thumb

When I had a couple of annoying faults with mine last year, Blue Bell said that it was for BMW to respond to my complaint which, of course they never did.

Blue Bell said that they couldn't do anything because BMW wouldn't.

It's just as well the bikes are great because BMW themselves aren't.

Why do the bike press never latch on to this? What about a J D Powell type bike customer survey?

I've always found BMW warrantee to be very comprehensive, what was the problem :nenau

Isn't click click no start the electrical problem that there has been a recall/upgrade for?

I've had it happen on three occasions, and after you charge the battery for just a couple of minutes, it starts. It happened twice in winter at about -3 and once in the summer heat.

Yeah Proff. Calm down. Go and eat some carrots around Oakhampton. Or pick a fight with a squaddie from the barracks ...hmmmm :)
