Do we need another sticky?

Nor did I to be honest.

Does Wapping have a hotel? Where is it? I'd like to go there :thumb2

By that, I don't mean that I wouldn't like to go to The Grey One's hotel. It looks the biz :thumb2

Well he seems to be promoting one or two at the moment with his little ride outs into that big wide world we call Europe, no offence Wapping:thumb.
I don't think "The Grey One" is trying to promote his hotel judging by the content of this thread. Maybe it wouldn't matter what he said, somebody will be waiting to suggest he was. I think it's called a no win situation (No ties with him by the way, haven't even met him).

Yes probably better- More consistent and with a knowedge base that covers a much larger area, I try to confine my posts to things I know something about- a novel idea for some I know.

As for number of posts I didn't know that quantity was the important factor. I have spare time now, almost none in the summer months, it's the nature of my business.

If you look you will see my first post was in May 2008, I watched from the sidelines at first, so it is actually 70 posts in 2.75 years!

When I have something to say I will post, and as I started this thread maybe I ought to contribute.

John

I stand corrected by my posting estimates :thumb2 and don't doubt for a minute that you're well knowledged about the area where your business is situated. Having looked at your website, I'm very impressed by both your hotel and the area where you are. To my shame, Im only vaguely familiar with the Tirol and to a lesser degree, Salzburg.

Do you do discount for UKGSer members?

hi Ronnie i (missus n me) have stayed with Jonh at his familly run hotel en route tae \Slovenia if oi remembers. we enjoyed our wee stay there n they even did a nice wee bit acnowlgement as it was wifies birthday,in spite o the fact that the place was heavin n the local band was playing for the first visit to their establishment (along with the local mayor)
all in all a good experience + a free Grossglockner and maltatal pass
i left with the impression o decent folks building up a new (to them) buisiness:beerjug:

I too have stayed with John and Ros and they do their level best to make the stay a happy one :Motomartin

I don't think for a moment John started this thread as a way to advertise his B&B... he's just trying to be helpful by sharing his extensive knowledge of his part of Austria, which is beautiful ;)

Yes to the UKGSer discount- subject to min 2 nights stay

Thanks for the kind comments and no need to feel shame. Our local tourist authorities don't market Carinthia at all in England because and I quote
"nobody come from England" When people do come here they are amazed by it all.

John

Is that because generally ukgsers never stay in the same place 2 nights running :augie

make it across the board ya tight tw@:beerjug:

No it's because a one night stay is just barely profitable as it is. All the laundry and room cleaning costs, plus the bloody Austrian paperwork have to be paid for from the price of a one night stay. And bikers staying one night often drink little (beer helping ugly people have sex since... and making poor hotel keepers slightly less poor) because they want to be up and off not properly experiencing another place the next day. Passing through somewhere is not being there.

John

lol

I have to say I agree, the tight twats on here are hardly got two nights in them ffs

I agree we should at least support people that support bikers abroad without them we are going to struggle :augie

I think it's just a shame that "those in the know" feel the need to belittle the novice tourer by taking the p1ss. Why? I had never toured abroad before last year and I was helped greatly by asking "obvious" questions to genuine queries. These "obvious" questions were a new thing to me but not to the experienced tourer who's help I needed. Some peoples attitude can be very rude and far from a place to aquire knowledge it can make you hesitant to ask questions. Just my observations anyway.

So sorry that's your observation. I think the majority of experienced tourers give of their experience freely. Some V experienced guys on this site.

Some can be a little tetchy but that's true just about anywhere including a couple of tourist offices I've visited in the past. Carry on and enjoy what you do and how you do it.

Hi Wapping

A bit of humour is always good but don't forget that a lot of folk really don't know. You obviously have a great deal of experience of touring and give of your time to answer many queries.

A lot of people who don't have this experience appear all too willing to believe things like my example of autobahn tolls in Germany. It's the "man in pub syndrome" used to get it in the garage trade. Customer brings car in, knows what's wrong because "man in pub" told him. Funny thing was said man in pub never seamed willing or able to fix it.

Anyway keep on answering the questions, you do a better job than I or most others on here can.

John

If you can't beat em join em...pedants.... seamed

In my book it means
"a line along which two pieces of fabric are sewn together in a garment or other article" so the man in the pub was sewing, by hand or machine? :augie

Never can trust those bloody spell checkers!

I have noticed that there are threads from time to time asking the same basic information about touring in the Alps. What's the weather like in.....? When is the best time to go? When are the passes open? What do I need to take with me? etc etc.
In my business I get asked these questions all the time and so I am working on an info sheet I can just send out.
On this site people asking questions that have already been answered is all too common, people who can't be bothered to look just post the question in the hope that others will do the work.
So maybe a sticky covering things specific to touring the Alps will help both those asking and those whos patience is strained by the questions.
.
What do the team think?

I would be happy to add my bit about my own area- might stop things like the post I saw (not on this forum) saying " The Grossglockner opens 1st May and the Nockalmstrasse two weeks later" Absolute nonsense-it might have happened like that one year but the facts are that both roads are owned by the same company. They aim to open every year as soon as possible, they say "at the begining of May" It depends on snowfall during the previous winter. Last year both roads opened 1st May, the year before 10th May, this year should be 1st May as we have not had a lot of snow. For us it is where the summer begins.

This is just one example of misinformation, there are plenty more

John

John, you crack on mate!! try to give a bit of advice and all you get is abuse:blast Should no better here mate

The problem with stickies is they start with some good info, then a bit more decent stuff gets added, then a whole load of bollox follows with the occasional great snippet of info buried in all this bollox.

Unless someone can be bothered to condense al the good stuff at the top, or into a "guide" or something it becomes quite difficult finding the good stuff even with stickies, general searches on a forum this large is little better than googling as you get loads of hits that are totally irrelevant.

General touring info is easy to find on the web:

http://sites.google.com/site/anywayroundtour/first-time

http://www.adventurebiketours.co.uk/motorcycle_touring_guide.htm

And loads more available with a few minutes googling, and we already have some of our own:

http://www.ukgser.com/forums/showthread.php?t=139005

I personally really like tour reports with pictures, it was reading such a report and being blown away by some pictures that really got me hooked on riding abroad.

Perhaps setting out a section just for touring - reviews, trip planning, useful tips etc would be handy, the current travel section has hundreds of topics just for the ALps etc. I would like to be able to peruse trip reports and look through handy tips without trawling through the other drivel.

Lastly, I have no problem answering a question, not much point having a forum if nobody ever posts.
