Went to give blood yesterday and saw a scheme which may be of interest to some.

Cambridge Advanced Drivers and Riders - a.k.a CADAR are giving free stickers out with a 'do not remove my helmet' message as well as your blood group and space for you to write an emergency contact number on it.

While it's easy to knock the scheme because there's no guarantee that the helmet is being worn by it's owner so they'd probably be checking your blood group rather than relying on what's on the sticker, I think it's worth it just for the 'don't remove my helmet' aspect and if it also helps promote the "give blood" message then it can only be a good thing.

Anyhoo if anyone wants me to pick some stickers up for them and post them out then just let me know as the blood donor centre is 5 mins from my work so it's no bother.

:thumb2

i went to give blood over here but was told no you are from england and may have CJD, thank you and go away...... ah well... oh and im Arh+

For some reason they've dropped me from their mailing list. AB+

They send you a handful of reminders and then take you off the list. This is because you are volunteering your blood and they aren't allowed to pester you for it unless you are an "active" donor.

Just takes a call or pop in if you want to take it up again. They'll still have your file etc :thumb2

BTW are these requests for me to get stickers?

If so I'll start a list...

Count me in. Recently had a motorcycle accident (don't get me started). Anything that can help in these cases is worthwhile.

OK, let's try to take this seriously then...

If you'd like me to get you a sticker, add your name and blood type to the list below. At some point in a couple of weeks or so I'll pop down to the donation centre and pick some up. I'll PM you all for your addresses nearer the time and get them posted out.

I don't want any money for postage, but feel free to make a donation to Motorcycle Outreach on my behalf if you'd like :thumb2

1. swissrob A+
2. orange AB+
3. freeloader B-
4. zoomboxer O- (the fastest type :D)

If any want taking off the list then let me know...

bustergonad - you're not on the list because you didn't mention what type you are :augie

Ex life saver

I used to work in a blood lab. IMHO no one would take a sticker as proof that blood is safe to give. They test you if there is time or you get O Rh Neg and lump it. An ABO blood test takes 2 minutes once you get the sample. so make sure someone sends the sample quickly:augie

There are dozens of other blood groups that are screened for if there is time. Any one of them can cause an adverse reaction in certain circumstances. Usually its much slower than an ABO mismatch which often acts in seconds.

Path (now you know where the name comes from.)logic.

Obviously that would help: Group O

'Tis what I thought too - but it makes no difference to me as I'm o Rh neg :D

Partly why I donate is knowing that my blood will have made it's way to a few RTAs and baby blood over the years....

No idea - If I have ever had a blood test then I was far too young to remember.

If you really want to know it just bimble along to your local donation session - usually well advertised near the place. New members are always welcome - just say its your first time :blush and they will give you a list of questions to tick off like:

age
fit
healthy
got a cold at the moment
had a serious op lately
been to any foreign far-off countries lately
ever had bum action with another man (they have to ask!)

pass the checks they will then take some of your finest red stuff off you.

Then you go off for your tea and biscuit (they turn a blind eye if you have more than 1 :thumb). Eventually you will get a card stating your name and group - providing, of course everything is acceptable - they don't just take anybody you know!
