Do you remove vario panniers overnight?

What you need is some big lockable metal boxes attached to the side of the bike that you could put the panniers in keep them safe overnight.

That's fine, but surely you can narrow that down a bit? :nenau

Would I need Metal Mules, Caja Sahels, Ard Cases, Stahlkoffers to ensure a good night's sleep?

Does anyone make a metal pannier that the bike folds into?

Why the barrage of abuse and level of sarcastic drivel??

If the question is percieved as naive by the experts out there then why not use your opinion more productively?

Continue with the schoolyard mentality of pointless abuse if you wish but at least be somewhat subjective??

Don't take it all to heart, dear heart.... and definitely don't change your questions, people will notice.

Your first question was: Do you remove vario panniers overnight?

Your second question was: Generally speaking, if the bike is left parked in a town centre do you think it's safe to leave the boxes on the bike overnight?

Your third question was: Whilst they're empty any potential scrotum isn't going to know this and may end up just ripping the things off.

Answers in the same order.

(1) Sometimes / often, yes.

(2) Sometimes / often, yes.

(3) That is a rhetorical question.

Now you (and others) may perceive those answers as not particularly helpful in the world of Tosserdom, so I will now take the trouble to expand:

(1) I cannot say too much more. If I perceive the need to remove my panniers (or do actually need my panniers separate) I do remove them. If I do not perceive the need, or do not need / want the panniers for some reason or another, I leave them on.

Nobody has ever tampered with them. That may of course be luck, who knows? I also keep a pound of butter in the fridge, to keep elephants away. It seems to work.

Carry out your own risk evaluation each time you stop... you and only you will know what to do.

(2) Again, not much more to say. In downtown Baghdad, central Paris, Mrs Miggins' B&B in Outerkyle-on-loch, leafy Devon, darkest Coventry, Lima city, Sclosswig-on-der-Oder..........??

They are all different... but oddly similar.

If someone, - who knows who or why - wants to steal or damage your panniers or bike (or you, for that matter) then they will. If they do not want to, they won't. It is that simple.

Carry out your own risk evaluation each time you stop... you and only you will know what to do.

(3) Definitely nothing more to add.

Re the inner bags, I will answer that, too. There are several choices:

(a) BuMW's own. Expensive. Some people like them.

(b) Third party versions. Cheaper. Some people like them, too.

(c) Plastic bags. Various different sorts, from Harrod's finest, to Bejam's, to black bin bags. Cheap (or free). Again, some people like them, too.

Some bods even fluctuate between (a) and (b) and (c) depending on circumstances. I know I do. What will you do?

Or I could just say:

You have asked the most juvenile questions known to man and deserve the replies you got. What do you think the answers might be? How is anyone, beyond you, meant to know what you want or maybe need to do at any one moment of the day or night?

Will you come back - having had your panniers broken into in Belfast or Bath or Belgrade - crying out that UKGser told you they would be safe? Or will you just wish that you had given your individual circumstances a bit more thought?

They are your panniers, it's your motorbike. They are not ours.

It is you that is standing in the town. Not us.

It is your trek to your hotel room, nobody else's.

It's called, free choice; handed down by God to Adam and Eve in the garden of Eden, it separates us from the higher apes.

Be confident. Decide for yourself.

Go in peace.

PS You may ask, "Why didn't you say that the first time?" The answer is, I found:

Somebody find me a gun, please.

Quicker and easier.

This really tells it all.

Circumstances will dictate the need.

On my last trip I left the panniers on the bike -- on previous occasions I have removed them.

If I go to Poland / Slovakia then I remove them when I go to lunch.

If it is Austria / Germany then I leave them on.

but saying that if I went to Glasgow I would take the bike indoors as well as the panniers.

If you feel uneasy then you are answering your own question:)

Blimey man, you have got some SERIOUS issues!

Go in peace.

I hope you find some - sounds like your world is full of conflict and animosity. My feeling though is is that you achieve some perverse satisfaction in being confrontational and obnoxious. Especially when you can hide behing the comfort and security of your PC.

Try being civil, you might even enjoy it.

I tried being
civil but all me
posts come out
like this.

As to being confrontational and obnoxious, I can manage those qualities any way I chose.

But, how rude, enough of me, already.

How about you, now you have got that off your chest?

Are you happy that you now know the answers to your three (later four) questions?

Back to the serious question of bike luggage being stolen.

I worry more than most but I still leave the panniers on the bike for the simple reason you have identified that it is a real pain in the back to lug the panniers up and down stairs in a hotel.

As for pannier bags for Varios. Get the Maine event ones. They are thinner than the BMW ones and therefore let you carry more stuff.

What if it gets stolen .. I just buy insurance that covers bike plus pannier. BMW insurance will cover your BMW vario panniers in the fully comp version.

What about the difference between replacement cost and insurance pay out. That's why I try to buy second hand everything ... apart from underwear. That way pay out should be close to replacement cost.

Tank bags and stuff on handlebar mounts seem to be more vunerable. Bloke on here had his tank bag nicked when he went to see the tower of pisa. Parked nearby. So lots of passerby but the ****** still got it.

Blimey, those are two words that I never thought I'd hear said about Wapping:eek:

Take a chill pill seakay. If you post a slightly bizarre question, you are bound to get some mild joshing and pish taking and take it as read that pannier removal at hotels is now the hot topic of every travellers preperation:thumb

Personally, why the feck would you take filthy panniers covered in road dirt into a nice hotel room when you can take the stuff out.:nenau Geta set of Verns which are bolted on and they would need a gas axe and a sledgehammer to get them off:D

Mmm - well its all been said - but I have to say I agree with Bilco re Wapping - entertaining more like.

Mind you times in the city must be hard if he has the time to write the long response!

Tate is a nice name for a secretary :thumb

The several of the guys at the old CT Bowring insurance brokers used to share a secretary.

They always used to call out: "Come on in, for a bit of serious dic work ...." To which she, without fail, always used to reply: "I know you won't be long, really...."

She used to pride hereself on her rapid short hand skills, too. :augie

Happy days, when the City was fun and the tea lady used to push the trolly round....:rob
