Doc’s French holiday 2023

Indeed and all different, private affairs.

Some of the rooms can be basic but on the whole they are good. The restaurants are often very good. Sometimes the owners don’t speak a whole lot of English but it’s part of the fun, I think. There again, the vast majority of hoteliers in Yorkshire don’t talk a whole load of French either.

Never really looked at Logis hotels before. Plenty to choose from at a reasonable price.

independently owned and most have a restaurant that specialises in regional cuisine

for small towns, villages and rural locations they are often the best option as the chains like Ibis are nowhere to be seen

Brit Hotels is a similar set-up, 170 independent hotels using a central booking system https://www.brithotel.com/

As Wessie says, the Brit (not British) association of hotels are pretty good, too. I first tripped over them by chance in Avallon, at the top of the Morvan. No dining restaurant but it was only a 15 minute walk, along pavements, on the flat, into town.

I was on that trip. Dak Hotel. I've used others in the group, most recently in Pau, Hotel Central. Again, no evening meal but a short walk to Place Clemenceau where I found a brasserie that brews its own beer. There's another place called Le Rosbif around the corner if someone is missing a fry up or korma.

Avec le ketchup, naturellment.

PS Indeed you were :beerjug:

Exactly, the hotels and restaurants are ''colour'' coded according to the style & ''pushiness'' of the rooms and food. My experience says if you get a ''blue'' colour then the food is pretty amazing. Not that the other classifications are bad, it just goes from more rustic at the bottom to very fine dining at the top. Should be all on the Website.

Todays task is to find a stopover for our last night before heading to Rotterdam for the ferry. I can fill in the rest of the trip later after Riders Rest.
I thinks 250 miles or less for getting to the ferry and looking at the coastal area down from Ostend.

Bruges (125 miles from Hook of Holland) is nice.

Berck, on the French coast, at 250 miles is nice.

Arras, inland in France is OK at 190 miles.

St Quentin at 220 miles.

That’s roughly the circle you would be looking at.

Are you sure he said 250 miles not kilometres? You know what time your boat departs and what time you’ll need to arrive to check in. Yiu also know how long it will take you to cover distance. The answer as to where to stay will be dictated by that bit of sums.

Thanks i will look at those areas. Always work in miles. Check in on ferry around 4pm. Like to have a steady day returning to the ferry and like to have a bit of time in hand just in case.

Anywhere in the Limousin gets my vote.
Much overlooked but after Corsica it’s the least populated department in Metropolitan France.
Parts of it remind me of the Black Forest but minus all the Bikermates. :thumb2

As Arsey about the hotel he likes in Poperinge

In Bruges, Martin's Hotel is nice. Underground parking, short walk to main square. Not owned by Arsey.
