Doc & Jayne's trip to the Netherlands

It's pending on our account from yesterday.

The same happened to me a few weeks back in France ,id filed up half a dozen times before I noticed, was told by barclays that the banking system in europe cannot pre authorise debit cards so they take a max amount and refund it when the transaction process completes, mine took 4-5 days but it depends on different banks and weekends etc. I used a credit card after a few days and that only took the amount for the fuel dispensed as credit cards can be pre authorised.
Toll booths do not seem to accept debit cards either but no issue with credit card.

Happened to me at a French supermarket they refunded my account with the full amount plus the cost of whot I put in.so I got a free tank of unleaded.but it still pisses you off when it happens.

This happened to me at least 4 times in France and Germany, usually unattended supermarket petrol stations, highest pre-authorisation was £150 or so, most stayed for a week or so on my account.

Thanks for the prompt... Just checked and I still have pending payments from 6 weeks ago

I never heard of this (scam) before....and I thought fleabay were bad enough

Really pissed me off as we had no idea this happened and never had it happen before. Hopefully as everyone says it will sort itself out.
We will keep checking the account.

It only happens at pay at pump stations. The opposite happens here, if I pay for fuel on my Amex at Tesco pay at pump, they take £0.99, then later it’s changed to the correct amount. It takes a few days.

Why is that then? How do they work differently then?

Work differently to what?

Easy to use, accepted everywhere, easy to top up, easy to manage, easy to 'freeze', all through the app on your phone. Decent exchange rates. Simple.

Revolut is much the same; I have both but use Monzo most.

For me travelling on my own the Revolut sounds spot on. Presume the Monza is the same sort of setup ?

just got back from my german-France trip...i use a Starling card, Mates were using normal bank debit cards to fill up where it took 130 euro's everytime they filled up, at the end of the 11 day trip some had still not got their money back. Starling card, load it up with say 200quid, as soon as i filled up it asked if i wanted to pay ( the correct amount) in sterling or euro's, no charge for using ATM'S, its a no brainer, I now use it for all my banking transactions on the move, supermarkets etc , I just load it up from my main bank account, saves carrying cards around

Bit of a downer on the trip. Filled up the bike at a small card only petrol station. Did the usual card number and took the petrol nearly 40 euros. Jayne checked banking today and we were charged 108 uk pounds. Not sure what has happened but Jayne rang the bank. Currently payment is pending but once cleared bank will hopefully sort it. She remembers payment on pump was just under 40 euros so wonder if it didn't re set when I put nozzle back in and someone has had a free refill on us.

keep an eye on this and ensure you get the refund to your card or at least the right amount gets eventually debited. I have lived here for 20 years and never heard of such a problem and we have a lot of friends driving / riding in NL who are not Dutch. Yes, in France I had the same issue; filled up for 25 Euro and my card was charged for 50. Never cashed in and eventually it came right.
Seems something funny has gone on.

A romantic walk on a rainy beach and the the War museum and aquarium. Not really a museum person but this was very good.
