it's the 2nd highest paved road after the one in Spain that goes to an observatory. Oztal goes to a glacier but not to a Col.

a lot of the confusion is that a road is not necessarily a Col i.e. a road that crosses a watershed between two valleys. The Cme loop off the Col de la Bonette often claims to be the highest paved road in the Alps but it is just a loop around a hill, not a proper Col.

What's the one in Spain? The most famous road to an observatory is Mount Teide but that's in the Canaries so it's yes and no for being the highest in Europe But if there's one on the mainland that I don't know I'll have to try and ride it!

1. I thought the otzal road in Austria was the highest road in Europe.

It depends on the definition.
It was always the highest pass now any old bit of road seems to qualify, even dead ends.
The French made La Bonnette the highest pass by putting a loop round the top, just to make it the highest, but the actual pass (watershed - usually a saddle point) is lower. That means the Col de l'Iseran is the highest pass.
Ötztaler Gletscherstraße is a dead end
Veleta in Spain is also a dead end.

There’s a spa when you descend down to the junction at the the Col du Lautaret, so you could always book her in there to relax and calm her nerves!

Just how big is the tank on that bike? €200 is an awful lot of petrol. Even at €2 per litre it’s 100 litres.

Ahh, all becomes clear. My card did this a couple of weeks ago around Strasbourg area. It was all back as it should be within an hour or so though. I think it just does it so that one cannot put more fuel in than they can pay for. Certainly did not affect me in any way.
It was 35.5 degrees at the bottom of the Col de Madeline when we were there. Too hot in bike gear when stopped.

For the bike? How big is the tank for heavens sake? OK - seen the reason mentioned! Not having a credit card I don't get these problems. We don't qualify for one.
