I filled my '02 1150 GS the other day to the brim. Within 10 miles one bar had disapeared from the readout. By 20 miles another had gone, by 30 miles 3 bars had gone from the readout. Usually all bars would still be lit at this mileage.
Any suggestions before I strip the whole lot out ?.

Firstly have a go at the plug under the right hand side of the tank.
Give it a bit of a clean with contact cleaner if you have some. I had exactly the same problem on my 1150. Cleaning this plug on someone elses advice worked for me. Its the big black one you have to unplug when removing the tank. Behind the pull off black plastic cover.

Cheers Gazza, I'll go and have a look at that right now. Wife's watching 'friends'.....load of old shite.

If it ain't the plug then its the float switch, Iv'e just had this on mine and the guys at Rainbow pointed me in the right direction.

You'll need to remove the Pump/Filter assy from the tank, use as much fuel as possible before you take it off, you'll need two replacement pipe clips before you start, you'll see the float is on a wire arm now its not the float that's the problem its the switch attached to it, carefully remove the assy, the wpier switch is exposed to the fuel, yes it is strange, and it drifts off the wiper near the top so does'nt show the whole range, just bend it in a little bit so it contacts all the way round the wiper and reinstall everything and you'll find it works OK then.

The block is fine........I'll try the float switch next. Need to empty the tank 1st. All the excuse I need to go for a blast tomorrow morning.Brilliant!!!!!!

Thanks guys. I'll let you know how I get on.

I had that problem.....

and sorted it by cleaning all of the contacts in the connector on the right by getting a small length of 'lectrical wire, taking off the insulation making a brush and brushing everything out, especially the female bits (!!). Put it back with a flair blob of Vaseline and Roberts yer farvers bruvver.

Try that before attacking the float switch.

Even more time to blast about then!!

dodgy fuel gauge

I had this problem months ago. Asked dealer, he said it was something to do with additives in the petrol. I doubted his reply. Anyway I did nothing to any connectors no cleaning no taking apart I just changed petrol stations. For some reason, the gauge worked perfectly. 3 months down the line I use my old petrol station again, guess what, gauge not working, back to other petrol station gauge works again.AAAHHHHHHH

Well,........I've taken out the pump and gauge unit, wiggled it all about like you do, re installed it, low and behold, it now works perfectly.
Strange.

its to do with the float wiper being exposed to the fuel, its a strange setup, did you notice the fule pump elecrical contacts are also in the fuel, a very wierd setup indeed.
Works though.

I was amazed how much gubbins was tucked away in the tank. Twas a bugger to get in and out too.Anyway , as you say , it works, and long may it continue to do so.

Thanks for your help.

Marcus:)

its how jet aircraft are are wired, all the earths end in the tank, thats what caused the jet to explode taking off from new york some years ago, nice thought as you jet off on holiday ?, not to worry now though, they've all been modified.
