Am considering a new bike with the enduro gear box to use off road and also on a big trip, but also use the bike as a commuter around london.

Am concerned about the useability of the short first gear in town.

Anyone offer any advice on whether it will be liveable with? What about caning it from the lights and into 2nd - useable or a pain in the a*se?

Ta.

To be honest, I was always wishing for shorter first gear when I rode my 07GS in London. I found when filtering got tight, I was having to get on the clutch more than I would have liked. I'd probably try one out if I were to get another one for commuting on.

IMHO all BMW dual sport bikes are FAR too highly geared in first, whether it's the R1200GS, the F800GS or even the G650Xchallenge.

The 'short' first gear is only about 10 per cent less which isn't much use at all. What I would really like is the first gear from the R1200RTP police special which allows clutch-in riding at walking pace. It would be brilliant for traffic and also offroad.

It's very difficult getting meaningful engine braking downhill offroad with the Xchallenge and the F650GS twin.

But to answer your question, yes, get the short first gear.

I had an '05 GS, then switched to an '08 GSA, with the Enduro box. I use it for commuting ( 24k miles per year) to London and back.

For working through the traffic I feel that the lower first gear really does help, my older GS always felt very highly geared and needed lost of clutch fanning at slow speeds.

I agree with Tim regarding the ratio, it could do with being much lower for off-road work. It is definitely better than the standard ratio though.

There does not seem to be any appreciable step between first and second, at least, not to me. Second and above are unchanged in the Enduro box, so there is a bigger step, but not by much.

Hi ,I've got a new GS ADV with the Enduro gearbox and I find that it's excellent for around town use - crawling along at walking pace filtering etc requires much less feathering of the clutch - personaly I'd recommend it :thumb

I've filtered through a lot of traffic 2-up with luggage on an 06 R1200GS (not adventure) . A lower first gear would have helped no end.

I intentionally went through central london tonight in heavy traffic, and really thought about this for the first time. Its blindingly obvious what the solution is, with the benefit of hindsight. Can't believe I didn't think of this earlier. All that clutch slipping over the last 5 years...

So. Enduro box it is then...

Cheers.

I think I've got the enduro box, because that's what was on the spec when i ordered it. However, i agree with Tim's comment, still feels too high!!

With regards to second gear, at town speeds (30 mph), i can use anything between 2nd and 4th. depends on traffic conditions.

has anyone fitted a second leaver on the left hand attached to the rear break?

may help with going down hill on the soft stuff???

Why on earth does BMW crow about putting a six-speed close ratio box in the F650/800GS? With six speeds to choose from BMW should be able to deploy much lower first gears plus an overdrive top (though the F650GS just about has this anyway).

All we need to do is to persuade BMW to
- fit a decent low first gear (it is a six speed box after all!)
- a side stand with a wider footprint
- folding gear lever
- folding brake lever

and four of my top moans will be fixed. I have others mind...

21" front wheel as an optional 'extra' on big the GS:nenau
