Does the 800 have a fuel filter?
I was filling the bike form a jerry can and through that I saw a metal flake come out of the can.
Just wanted to make sure.

This must be a difficult one to answer? I have looked through the workshop DVD and the parts microfiche and can find no mention of a filter, there is a stariner attached to the bottom of the imersed fuel pump but that seems to br it.
Our old F650 had a fuel filter/pressure release unit which cost a fortune so I doubt many were ever change unless faulty, We did not touch ours in 36000miles.
I did change my R1150R filter at 24000 miles, a real pig to do and I was worried about fuel leaking out of a giant o ring on the bottom of the tank. I took the old filter to bits and there was almost nothing in it.
With this in mind its possible a filter is built into the pump assembly, it looks big in the picture but if it is there is no intenetion to change it.

Thanks. I might go down to my local dealer (not BMW, but great by any measure) and get a filter fitted if they can. Also means that I won't pay BMW prices.

The filter will be under pressure so a cheap inline filter is not suitable. It needs to be specifically designed for external use on a high pressure fuel injection system and use the correct hose clamps. Many of the GS1150 riders will have fitted external filters, check out the following article on the Internet BMW riders forum.
