does the front come off?

i want to freshen up the front of my black engine case
does the whole thing come off ok or do i need to look out for sh1te happening?

gaskets etc needed?

forgive my ignorance, never done it before.
as its plastic i was just going to paint it up... or is it not?!

If your taking about the Plastic cover over the Alternator belts,

it comes off easily enough 6 bolts (?) no gaskets and standing facing the bike pull it down an to the left, some machines have a wee doohicky that sits at the end of the alternator pulley that can catch the cover, making it a bit more awkward, once you've done it once you get the feel of it.

Fitting is the reverse.

i think i see clear silicone in the joint between the engine block and the front large casing, does that not need a gasget?


Or are you talkign about the little cover up the top?

Not necessary to disturb the front cover just for re-painting,

although for a 1200, it will equally apply to the 1100 / 1150 engine.

While it's possible to paint the engine front cover in situ (by which I mean the main metal cover, not the plastic alternator belt cover) - I did mine this way, it's a right sod to get to and actually manoeuvre the paint can around.

It would be a lot easier to do a good job if you remove the cover and do it on a bench. However this does mean some dismantling (alternator belt, crankshaft pulley, Hall sensor from memory). You'll probably also need a new crankshaft oil seal.

If you leave it in situ, an elevating bench would make it much easier than working on the floor like I did

since yo mentioned plastic I thought you where talking about the little cover that covers about 2/3rds of the front of the engine block.
