Does the rear brake operate the abs pump, or just the front?

New to me 1150gs, bought in an online auction, bike was a bit scruffy when I got it, no service history.

Just had my fist ride today and the front brake works ok, the rear is virtually non existant. The front causes the abs pump to run, but the rear doesn't. I assume it should. Anyone got any good ideas of what to check first?

The ABS light flashes constantly whilst riding. I assume this is related, also the red ! light is on some of the time but not all of the time. I think the abs light was flashing at different speeds whilst I was out, but not completely sure.

On a different subject it had the beginnings of a speed wobble above 50mph. Any suggestions why?

If anyone can offer a word or two of advice I'd be grateful.

Thanks, Mark

Yes the rear brake should opererate the ABS, check the ABS ring and the gap to the sensor.
Speed wobble may be tyres....or your back wheel about to fall off which could explain both:D

No joke, check the rear wheel nuts are tight. Also have alook at the rear pads, inside one wears a lot quicker than the out side one.

Thanks, I was thinking it may be the tyres, they're 3/5 worn, and the discs and pads are all shot, so once I've got it the servo / abs working properly I'l stick new tyres / discs / pads onit before I use it in earnest.

So what do I check first to debug the servo / abs? Is there a way of knowing if its working without having to ride the bike?

Hopefully the wheel will stay on - when I got it a worrying number of bolts were loose, so I've been all over it with the torque wrench.

I presume the bike is a post 2003 model ? if pre 2003 ignore everything i've posted.

It's not the abs pump you can hear running it's the servo pump.

Turn on the ignition and first operate the front brake and then the rear brake , they should both make an electrical "whirring" noise.

Check the rear brake light switch is working -don't just look to see the rear light glow, you have to check the filiment lights up, it has a safety feature which lights up the tail light filiment if the brake filiment blows.

Push the sliding rear caliper in towards the rear wheel with your foot, the caliper should slide and the pads should spread apart. If they don't ( and please give it some muscle when pushing with your foot, don't dilly dally and expect it to slide) then the rear caliper has seized.

But the simpliest thing is to plug it into someones 911 diagnostic unit and it will reveal all. :D

If the servo is fecked a replacement is ££££ ( perhaps that's why it was in an online auction :augie), but there are other options.

Thanks, this is exactly the sort of thing I wanted to know.

yes its 2005. I'll have a look at the brake switch / light tonight.

Have ordered a GS911 at the weekend so will plug in later in the week and have a better look.
