Bike starts ok after after a couple of churns, seems to run ok but has big flat spot at about 4500 particularly when in 5th / 6th

If I take the caps off of the secondary coils it wont start at all.

Put them back on and normal service is resumed

Yes,
£60 odd each. Pull the secondry leads off one at a time so you know which side has failed. No point in buying 2 coils when only one has failed.
