Does this sound too much of a coincidence?

I had my G650GS in for a 6000 mile service. Rode it home 10 or so miles on the Friday. Rode 3 miles into work on Monday and thought it sounded odd. Tried to ride the three miles home that night and it cut out three times, the third time the odd ticking noise had become a really bad clunking so I got it recovered to the dealers.

Apparently the big end has gone - the cause, I am told, is because the circlip has come off the oil pump causing it to fail. The dealer claims this is 100% coincidental to having it in for a sevice, even though I have ridden less than 20 miles since they stamped the service book and it sounding different when I rode it away to when I took it in.

Any thoughts?

One heck of a coincidence IMO. I hope you can come to some sort of amicable agreement with the stealer.

Definitely suspect to me.

They would have drained your oil for the 6000 mile service. This is usually done by removing the oil tank mounts and drain plug and tilted a bit to drain the tank fully, My money would be on when they removed the tank mounts and were wiggling the tank to drain - the hose which goes from the bottom of tank to oil pump worked loose and they neglected to notice.

Present them with this argument and explain that you have not been near that hose and has always been fine and seems very unlikely it would just work loose, particularly after they had just put potential stress on it by working on that area of the bike. I would not let them get off easy on this one, no matter what excuse they try.

Watch this video here from the point I have linked to you and keep an eye on the hose leaving the bottom of the oil tank to the oil pump it will give you a visual idea of the potential stress created in that area in question while performing the oil change.

and if they are still unwilling to consider even the possibility of liability, let me know who the dealer was, so I can make sure I never take my bike there to be worked on.

...and if you do suspect something a little more than coincidence, why did it not occur to you stop immediately and draw their attention to the fact you felt it sounded different to when you took it in?

It doesn't the help the situation you are in now, I know, but just curious. :nenau

Most likely it is connected. I am not sure that is enough though. Maybe some gentle pressure is required followed by a second opinion, followed by a solicitors letter.

Am I missing something here

The dealer says a circlip has come off the oil pump (presumably stopping the rotor turning and pumping oil?).

Where as you are talking about the oil feed hose coming loose if I understand correctly. Surely if this happened the motor would be covered in oil and it would be obvious what had happened

Hmmm.. Maybe I misunderstood? :nenau Was the dealer was taking about the retaining ring that holds the white plastic cog in place behind the clutch cover for the oil pump?

JayC - I was listening to the bike on my way home and had decided I was going to call the dealer to discuss the noise - I obviously didn't realise how critical it was at the time but stopped riding as soon as it started to sound severe as, for the first time, it sounded like it could be causing damage. I have the journey saved from my helmet cam too.

The bike was in my garage over the weekend and no oil has dropped and there was no signs of leakage when I called in the breakdown.

The dealer said the split pin had failed causing the circlip to come off meaning the oil pump wasn't pumping oil.

Would a circlip falling off a bike that had only done 6000 miles and just been serviced be a manufacturing fault and covered under warranty?

Circlips don't just fall of if fitted correctly unless they have been damaged when fitted or a poor quality or faulty.

if no oil was pumping you would have had an oil warning light on instrument panel

Sounds like someone didn't put oil in it!

I'd seriously be calling the dealer principle and informing them of the shenanigans and depending on their attitude just ask for your bike to be repaired at their cost or telling them that you'll be contacting the motoring press etc etc

Surely the oil light would be on if there was no oil.

How do they know? Have they stripped it already or is this all guesswork? If there was no external oil leak was there oil in it? Have they seen this circlip? Is the bike still under warranty? They can't just walk away from this. I thought all BMW work was guaranteed. JJH

Perhaps I should have said "Enough" oil ?? maybe a litre when 3.2 or 2.7 are required

Still if it wasn't pumping (due to it's wonky circlip) then the oil pressure light should have come on

The dealer has not tried to walk away at all. The bike is with them, they have looked at it and found this to be the issue and have submitted a report to BMW to authorise a fix under warranty.

I just wanted to get others opinions as to how unconnected to the service they felt this was

I spoke with the manager at the dealers just now and he assured me that this is coincidence and that he will ensure the bike is back to rights before it comes back to me, so hopefully all will be ok!

I doubt they would not sort it for you:thumb2
