doesn't push-to-talk mean you push-to-talk on Autocoms?

Hi

Got a mate of mine who's just ordered a new 1200GSA and the dealer is fitting an Autocom 300 Duo to it as part of the deal. He's asked them as part of the deal to put the push-to-talk switch on as well so that the dealer has all the hassle of running the cabling under the tank.

The dealer is in the middle of doing this but has asked a weird question. He's asked if he wants the push-to-talk switch to be set to either "bike-to-bike" or "rider-to-pillion" ??

Now I thought that the push-to-talk switch did both? Is this right or is it just a case of where he plugs the end of the switch into the autocom unit depending on what he wants to do?

cheers

The PTT is for the bike to bike only as it allows you to talk to your pillion without transmitting what you are saying to the world via your bike to bike radio. It is either VOX/PTT/constant TX via the little toggle switch. It connects in line to the GREY radio cable so can only connect there not any of the other AUX ports.

Rider pillion is full duplex - all the time.

I am sure Rich will be along soon to clarify.

Cheers techno,

Part of the reason for asking is because I had part 1457 (PTT) on mine but I haven't tested it yet for bike to bike as I'm saving up for my radio :)

I started thinking that I'd put the wrong bit on and it was of no use.

I'm sure GSRich will clear up my numpty-ness.

cheers again :beerjug:

Well the PTT give the rider three different options on how they transmit out for the bike to bike. The main PTT comes with a three way toggle switch allowing the below

LHS constant transmit, to broadcast directs or long talking sessions until the radios time out after a minute or so of use. Only the biek set to this will be transmitting so no other bikes can talk back

Middle PTT so the main button needs to be pressed to transmit out. This allows for the rider and pillion to use their VOX to talk to each not being transmitted out to the other bikes. Or if any singing is going on its not transmitted out to the other bikes for you to get shouted at for poor singing and also hogging the channel etc.

RHS VOX so the systems VOX will transmit out so no buttons need to be pressed so the pillion could talk to the other bikes without having to disrupt the rider from riding away. With VOX the first word will be missed from any transmissions so control words are needed as in saying the persons name then carry on which what is wanting to be said. prime example if "second left" was to be transmitted out all the other bikes would hear is "left" So with saying "dave we need to take the second left over" Dave would hear "we need to take the second left over" the over bit knowing hes finished the transmission so Dave could talk back etc.

I hope thats cleared things up and ive not gone OTT.

Cheers for that GSRich - thats FAB about the PTT :D

I thought it must work something like that. Its just the dealers question of whether he wants the PTT set up for bike-to-bike or rider-to-pillion seems a really weird one.

I'll just let them know that its bike-to-bike so they are happy and just do the job of routing the cables under the tank correctly.

cheers mate :beerjug:

Ideally you want the leads routed over the top of the tank to save the lead from picking up any bike related interference, this is how I or we always fit them here.
