For those who've 'been there done that', if you were to base yourself in the Dolomites for 4-5 days, where would you choose and why?

Cortina d'Ampezzo -
Wide variety of shops / cafes / restaurants, cable cars to the hills in the town, plenty of public travel options.
Can "do" the Grossglockner and back in an easy day.
Wake up each day surrounded by the hills, but aren't on top of you, so you see the sun more.
But, it can be expensive / busy and isn't central to the Dolomites.

Canazei- we stayed 4 days last year. proved a ideal base for multi pass days out. Plenty of eateries to suit most tastes as well

Find somewhere on a crossroads or T-junction. Why? Because it gives you a choice of directions to head out from.
There’s lots of choice, depending where in the Dolomites chain / area you want to be. Arabba is often a popular location. Why?
A. Lots of hotels, though some might shut between the end of the summer season and the start of winter.
B. It’s reasonably central to the Dolomite region.
C. It’s on a road junction.

We're off on 4th Sept, 4 days to meander to Bormio for a day off, then likely base in Dolomites for rides out.
16 days in total, hotels/B&B's will be the biggest costs hence, I need to search out the bargains whilst still in an area with a few bars and eateries.

haha, good luck with that in the Dolomites.
as reported in a current trip blog, no bargains in Italy or Switzerland. Stay in Austria where it is relatively cheaper, especially beer.
Yes, I have realised that, Cortina is already out of the question! I'll check out the Austrian borders, cheers.
Hotel Olympia in Arraba .
they did a few years ago half pension board ,not the poshest hotel but simple brilliant value and loads of good food .

I’ve used the Olympia every time I’ve been to the Dolomites. Can’t fault it.
In Arabba I've stayed in the Pordoi and the Malita - both fine but the Malita is a bit more upmarket and very nice.

Corvara is the best 
Arabba always been good for us when we have been in the Dolomites
+1 for Corvalla,pension Victoria is excellent and reasonably priced.
Very nice, a cheaper option maybe Hotel Al Forte a couple of miles out of town, part of it was a WW1 fort giving it a bit of character, half board works well as nothing else in walking distance, perfectly located for many ride outs....
You can create endless variations, if it is hot then go out as early as you can and get back before you melt or Thunderstorms hit.
It's been a few years but we've stayed in Arabba and Cortina; both nice places and well placed for a wander around; of the two i thought Arabba was the more quaint; although that could have been because the weather was better. Make sure yer pockets are well packed for both tho;
Thanks for your input guys, I’m going to have to dig deep in the pockets for this one, I’m so used to the cheap accommodation of Spain and Portugal!
Stayed in Canazei twice and both times for 4 days ; so very much to do/see. You are right next to the ‘Sella Ronda’ which is a dream to ride for a day . Do not consider dropping in from Austria ; it takes too long to travel distances in these mountains . Ortisei on one side , Cortina on the other ; both very different
Plan what to see , because so many cable car options or so many walking options . The toll road to Refugio Auronzo ( Tre Cime and the walk to Misurina viewpoint ) needs to be pre booked many days before ! This is one of the world’s top destination for walkers.
Life will never be the same again
Hotel costs are high but become ok if willing to share a room with your biker mate .
Seceda cable car ; a series of two ( Ortisei) and Sassolongo ‘coffin lifts’ have views to see.
