For those who've 'been there done that', if you were to base yourself in the Dolomites for 4-5 days, where would you choose and why?
I need to search out the bargains
Yes, I have realised that, Cortina is already out of the question! I'll check out the Austrian borders, cheers.haha, good luck with that in the Dolomites.
as reported in a current trip blog, no bargains in Italy or Switzerland. Stay in Austria where it is relatively cheaper, especially beer.

Arabba always been good for us when we have been in the DolomitesFind somewhere on a crossroads or T-junction. Why? Because it gives you a choice of directions to head out from.
There’s lots of choice, depending where in the Dolomites chain / area you want to be. Arabba is often a popular location. Why?
A. Lots of hotels, though some might shut between the end of the summer season and the start of winter.
B. It’s reasonably central to the Dolomite region.
C. It’s on a road junction.
Very nice, a cheaper option maybe Hotel Al Forte a couple of miles out of town, part of it was a WW1 fort giving it a bit of character, half board works well as nothing else in walking distance, perfectly located for many ride outs....Hotel Olympia in Arraba .
they did a few years ago half pension board ,not the poshest hotel but simple brilliant value and loads of good food .
