When getting one of these things, whats the best, .com or .co.uk

and whats the difference ?

Thanks

Edit: Just googlied, .co.uk is seemingly better

I believe the .co.uk means its a UK based company and .COM could be anywhere in the world.
Or thats how it was originally

under the new nazi internet laws passed in the US if your a .com you will be subject to their laws.....:blast

so if your a UK company or individual stay away from .com's:thumb2

If your company's identity is linked with the UK, the answer's obvious. If not and you are hoping to reach a world wide audience then .com is probably preferable. If in doubt, use both, pointed to the same website:it will only cost you a few pounds per year. At least consider how you would feel if you established a .co.uk company and somebody started using the same .com

.co.uk is harder to say when you're telling someone that 'my website is at www den's slaughterhouse dot co dot uk' as opposed to 'den's slaughterhouse dot com'

.com also sounds 'better' more 'official' maybe, whereas '.co.uk' sounds a little provincial?

People expect a '.com' these days, to a degree :nenau

A ".co.uk" domain will cost a few quid less than a ".com" domain, but because they are less popular, you may well find that "dennisthompsonswhorehouse.co.uk" is available, where "dennisthompsonswhorehouse.com" may well not be available.

Use THIS link to type in as many combinations of the domain name you're thinking of as you possibly can.......think outside of the box a little as well.....ideally, the name needs to be as short and catchy as possible, relevant to your business but should not need spelling out to a customer letter for letter.

Den, Fast2host are the ones to use mate....Steve Currell here is the owner and he will sort you out a 15% discount.......I know from using them lots that they are very helpful, and have all of the software that you are going to need to install for your new site.

The package I would advise you to go for is the Linux PHP basic account.......it's what the commercial sites I've built use and it's more than adequate for you....£35 quid a year plus the domain registration, but you get the tosser's discount :thumb2

Don't worry too much what the difference between that and the windows hosted account is.......the Linux one is the one to go for and it makes no difference to your end of things, just trust me on that one :kissy2

As a direct answer to your original post.......If I was in your shoes right now, I'd go for the best match of my ideal domain name, ideally a dot com, but if not, a dot co dot uk.......I'd get that registered with F2H, then I'd get a site up fast :thumb2

Get a big piece of paper and scribble down all the variations of the ideal website name you and the lovely Mrs Den can come up with, then enter them one by one into the linky above, see what's available and go for it :thumb

Den, if you are registering any domain names, make sure YOU register them.

Allowing anyone else to do so can result in you not having total control.

Use www.ukreg.com once registered you can easily secure any domain name available in seconds.

Get both and point them to the same site. As the previous poster - I would feel absolutely sh*tted if someone started trading on my name, especially if it was a horrific site and you are trying to establish a clean and clear identity

Excuse my igorance Paul, but whats the diff between this one and Steve's.
Ive looked at several. They all basically do the same thing to me. ( Look ... think of it this way. You show your mum your new motorbike. You had a fs1e and you now bought a laverda. " Is that one any different to your last one son? Its a different colour")

Paul is referring to where you register the .co.uk not where you host it. Even though it can seem a bit OTT registering it at one place and hosting elsewhere it makes things easier if one day you are not happy with your hosting company to move.
Register the name first in your name using your details, then host it where you like.

Richie's reply is spot on Den :thumb2

Register your domain name with UKReg but host it with Steve or anoyone else.

Take this scenario…. You let XYZ register your name and host your site. 12 months down the line company XYZ decided to charge you 10 times what you have been paying and say, if you want to get out it will cost you a squillion quid.

If they have control of your domain name, and more importantly, your DNS settings, they have you by the whatsit’s.

If you have registered it yourself, you can just tell them to go do one and re-host your site elsewhere just by changing the DNS records yourself :thumb2

Den enters the modern world !!!!

Now registered with ukreg.com as denelectrics.com and .co.uk

Will do the rest of the stuff on Steve's site when the time comes.

Now ..... van logo's .....
