Well thats it done. I've sold my beloved ZRX1100 got a huge bank loan and bought a 2003 blue and white R1150GS.
Totally chuffed with the bike, but i've got some questions.
The bike has done around 8000 miles and the previous owner said something about using mineral oil in it till its ran in. What oil would you guys recomend putting in it when I change the oil?
The bike has a remus pipe and a k+n fitted and the guy lifted the seat and showed me a little plug thing that apparently stops the bike runnung lean, is this a real thing?
How do you avoid the pipe and slippers remarks? I'm only 24 so I can't be having all that!
Any other advice would be welcomed.

Hello amd welcome,
regarding engine oil you can actually use 20w50 mineral oil. it must be the correct specification though.
As for "running in" it takes a little longer on one of these bikes and some may say that they are run in when they stop using oil, which can be upto approximately 12000 miles.
If you want to isolate yourself from friends and family for days on end simply hit the search button and type "engine oil" "cat code plug" etc - if you don`t want to speak to anyone for a very long time type in "lights".
As for avoiding pipe and slipper remarks your`e doomed. get rid of all known previous accomplices, attend one of your local meets and don`t forget to bring half a pound of rough shag with you :D
Enjoy.

Pipe & Slippers

The P&S image doesn't really stick any more. These days there's more than a hint of envy & curiosity from rufty-tufty bikers of all persuasions - especially the ones that have tried to follow a well-ridden Gessie along a nadgery road.

(Although in my experience RT riders tend to be a bit beardy - the fairing even has a little pipe locker built into it)

Yes, the GS is sensible, comfy & practical, but it's also astoundingly good fun. Usually those qualities don't go together, and that's the magic of the GS.

Enjoy your new ride Yodagoat and welcome - hope you will post your impressions of GS ownership.

Let your mates try and follow you "along a nadgery road."
using mineral oil in it till its ran in.
Yup, keep an eye on the level though, every fuel stop. Until run in it will drink as much as 1 litre every 1000mls. My 1150 only stopped using that much when it reached 25000mls. It still gets through around 500cc/1000mls. Now it is run in I use Silkolene 15w50 semi synthetic which most bike shops sell. 20w50 I think is a little to heavy(especially in winter) unless the outside temp is above 20degrees.
Do a search, there is buckets of info around on oil.
a little plug thing
Try a search for "CAT CODE PLUG"
Enjoy :thumb

Look in the handbook, a very useful source of info.

The best way to aviod the 'pipe and slippers' remarks is to sit calmly behind a bunch of sportsbike riders along a twisty 'B' road.

Watch them struggle (and fail) to lose you.

I guess my bike is still running in after 26k then.... :eek

Consumption has dropped, it's now stable at around 0.5ltr per 2000 miles.

Old Holbourn for the pipe. I'd recommend tartan check slippers from Marks and Spencers.

Should have given it more stick when it were a young `un :D

Pipe and slippers remarks

When the weather is foul (as it is here now) and you roll up on your GS covered in mud I don't think you will hear any such remarks. the sporty boys will have left their bikes in the garage. Brian in cold Vienne. ( I was out this morning and was pleased to have ABS -although it was not needed.)
