I've just spent the last 2 days turning this:

back into something both rideable and presentable. And I thought I'd succeeded - took it out to the petrol station for a first ride (running beautifully), put a gallon in, went and paid, walked back to the bike.......and found a pool of oil underneath :( Running (not dripping) out from the bottom of the alternator belt cover.

It's the front crank oil seal which I replaced earlier today following a Haynes manual because that was handy and my factory manual is electronic and therefore on the computer upstairs. Anyway, Haynes says to fit the seal to the cover (after being 'pre-formed' to fit the crank) and then fit the cover to the bike. Which I did, feeling that it wasn't the right way to do it. I should've listened to my inner voice shouldn't I? New oil seal obviously buggered, bike now not usable until I can order and fit a new one. Factory manual, on checking, says to fit the seal with the cover in place :doh

Not sure how easy it'll be to fit a new seal with the wishbone in place - anyone tried? After putting the whole thing back together again the less I have to dismantle the better. Also, not impressed with the genuine seal - might look for a better one.

i have often wondered if there was a seal that doesnt need forming, seems a bit old fashioned
