Whilst writing a eulogy for my recently departed Mother Inlaw my 8 year old computer decided that it would yet again try my patience by completely locking up, thus loosing all that I had typed in. Having dissed me for the last time and not realising that my emotions were running a bit high, my old computer failed to regain consciousness after the sound kicking and flying lessons I gave it up the garden path.

I am presuming that the hard drive is still operational and I would like to recover the information that is on it. How would be the best way to do this? There’s nothing iffy on there so any option would be fine.

I have since bought a fairly basic laptop, Would any of the memory chips from the old computer be any good for increasing the memory of the laptop?

Is there an adapter to convert a scanner to USB?

Any memory from your old PC would certainly not fit your laptop, PC's use DIMMS (dual in line memory modules) laptops use SODIMMS (small outline dual in line memory modules) so neither the twain shall meet!!!!

The only way to retrieve data from your old HDD (hard disk drive) is to either put it into a mates PC and transfer the data onto some kind of media such as a USB key, CD ROM etc or buy an external USB HDD which can prove costly.

Suggest unless the data on the old HDD is invaluable that you start the eulogy again!!!

I think the likes of PC world do data retrieval from HDD but again there is a cost.

Geoff...as Robbo said, the easiest way or recovering any data on the old HDD is to plug it into another pc as a 'slave' drive (you'd need to change the jumper settings on the end of the HDD to do this but it's fairly well marked usually) and then save anything you want onto CD or DVD.

I'm quite happy to do this for you if you like, gimme a buzz and we can sort it out.

And no, you won't be able to use any memory from the old pc in the laptop....

As for the scanner, there are various adaptors that will take different types of plug into a usb connector....it'll be pretty hit or miss though as to whether it will work and depends on what type of scanner, its plug and so on......the adaptors will be prertty cheap though so you don't have much to lose trying it.

HTH

On reflection, we could do it even easier than that.....I've got a wireless USB dongle so we could transfer everything from your old HDD to the laptop through that in a couple of minutes ;)

Sorry it's taken so long to reply, you know what it's like, Mother in Law to cremate, Nursing Home for the Father in Law to find.

Anyway thanks for the replies chaps.

It's not that I need anything off it desperatly its just the old hoarding instinct, not wanting to throw anything away that I might need later.

One of the spotty kids at work can sort it apparently.

Again thanks for your help
