What are you looking for? Weight, warmth and budget

So, my take…
For long, multi-climate trip a puffer jacket is one of the most important items to pack.
Down packs smaller than man-made.
Original Rukka Down-X is by far the best with most riding jackets because it doesn’t interfere with connecting zips.
But you look like a matador walking through town in it at night.
Klim Maverick is over-priced and doesn’t pack that small. Rab Microlite is better value.
Best combo I’ve found over the years (and nothing else comes close) is Arcteryx Cerium SL (sadly now like hens teeth. LT version is 50% bigger when packed) and Klim Zephyr over the top.
I have ridden round the world with this combo and haven’t frozen yet.
Mind you, in properly cold places I carry a heated vest too…

Im looking for a waterproof over jacket that will pack small , It will be worn when it rains or gets very cold as an outer layer.
In winter i wear a buffalo 6 , or a berghaus synthetic down jacket . Ive a Berghaus paclite extreme thats getting to end of life.
I also have another paclite but find that a bit lightweight and not warm enough.
It will also get use as an over jacket on bike in warm climates if it rains.
Budget cheapish

Berghaus GTX paclite is the lightest properly waterproof jacket I've ever come across - and I've put to a few pretty severe tests. Not very robust though and the earlier (much more packable) version had a non-waterproof zip so would let water in eventually.

I have a Mountain Equipment mid weight, a lightweight Klim and a huge great Rab down jacket. All good kit. The Rab is ace for the football with just a T shirt underneath and wonderful whenever you stop walking or camp. Really warm. It is one of these in Sheffield Wednesday blue: https://rab.equipment/uk/mens-neutr...objectID=83571&indexName=rab_live_uk_products

But my favourite jacket is this one:

I’ve been in blizzards in the Dolomites and torrential rain in the Peak District for several hours and stayed bone dry. It’s the best waterproof jacket I’ve ever had. Brilliant kit. Expensive but top quality. If anyone is interested in buying one, they are close fitting. Mine is a large and just about the right fit although not easy to wear a bulky layer underneath. Not that I often need to of course as I’m usually on the move in it.

Right, I thought stuff jacket meant down. I use Keela these days for shells

I have a Rab down jacket and find it too warm unless its below freezing.

Called into the local charity shop for some dog towels and spotted this Buffalo jacket from the 80’s. Bargain at a fiver 😂

My friend, who trained extensively in Norway, swears by Buffalo Systems. (They seem to have stopped making sleeping bags?)

PHD clearance, a saving if you can find owt that'll fit, and suits. https://www.phdesigns.co.uk/bargain-box

I've a waterproof RAB down coat, it's more than adequate for here, though it's getting old now. I got it from their Derby outlet, it didn't cost a lot and owes me nothing. I wonder at the amount of gear they knock out of their outlets these days, it seems to be produced for that purpose.

What a bargain...my riding partner on some 2 day cycle orienteering events in the early 90s wore that colour. I was sure he'd sewn the reflective bits on himself....seemingly not...

Another piece of civilian military kit that was considered a must have and self bought prior to the Buffalo 6 was the Helly Hansen double pile (in/ext) jacket, this was held in high regard with cold weather climates back in the 80's/90's. Still sold today in HH work wear collection, not sure if it's the same quality as yesteryear, I've still got mine, although it's shrunk over the years. ;) You pretty much can't go wrong with a fleece as a mid layer garment, if it has the modern day thermal qualities similar to the rest of them.
