HI all, hope some one may be able to help. I'm stripping down my other R1100 which is an S version. Just changed the clutch and thought I would remove the headers and shine them up (I like shiny).

Had the usual problem with stuck header nuts rusted on. 2 broke the other 2 succumbed to plenty of heat - eventually.

But now I can't get the down pipes to budge one little bit :(

No matter how much I wiggle, push, pull or clout with a bLoodey big hammer, nadda, nuffink, nowt gives.

Any body had a similar problem and found a solution?

Cheers

tried that

That's why I posted - I've done searches already

Why have you found any thing yourself?

Cheers

Maybe you could try getting the engine as hot as you can (hot air gun or maybe run the engine a little if you can - but not too long, we all know what that does!) And then chuck a bucket of cold water over the headers only. Might be just enough of a shock to break them free, especially now the bolts are off?

Just a thought, so no guarantees!

I've got an S I'm dismantling ATM. I 'was' just going to change the front subframe cos it's fractured in 3 places and the nose is wiggling around like an anteater but the whole bike is bolloxed (175k) so I'm completely dismantling and re-powder coating etc.

I put a tiny groove in each header nut with a dremel so I could see the bolt then poured some 3 in 1 in for a day. 12 years on and they just came off lovely:)

What kind of hammer are you using? Personally I would wind a rag round the pipe then twat it with a big lump hammer. I've also got my favourite big f'off rubber mallet that I can twat things till my heart's content with. Then I'd start beating a screwdriver head down behind the mating point.

I've a big tool with a U shape in the end that's specifically made for getting BMW downpipes out of heads ( actually it's an airhead exhaust nut spanner but don't tell the piss stained airhead owners).

The U part of the exhaust spanner goes into the bend on the downpipe and you hit the end with a hammer.

Jobs a carrot.

Thanks Steptoe, didn't think of that. I have that very tool left over from my airhead days :thumb2

I'll go back through my pics to see if I can find the one of my mate Alan with the rear wheel tied to a tree and a car tied to the headers trying to get them off... :D

Not looking forward to that at all. You just know the chances of getting all 4 out is not good :eek
