If you run a stubby without the CAT, it will be very loud because you will basically have a straight through pipe:eek:

The 1200 needs a bit of back pressure to run really well:thumb

as stated the 1200 stubby would have to run with the cat but im hoping it will incorperate a removable baffle for those who like it loud.
ive not done any of the early bikes yet because i have no patterns but im happy to look at pipes/collecter boxes etc to let you know.

any ideas what the weight saving is on an 1150gs fitted with the replacement y-piece and stubby?

hi Pipey , if you dont have any luck with an airhead pattern ,ive got a complete system you can use as im about to start a strip down and rebuild of my bike. You more than welcome to do a copy from mine. keep it till your done and sell me one of the systems when your done:thumb
 
+1 for 100GS PD airhead pipes. My front pipes and cross piece bit could do with replacing.

Also, on my pal's 1200, we removed the stock silencer, with a view to fitting a stubby - result - way too loud, and uneven power curve. But, if you like it loud .....!

Very interested in your headers for the 1200..... could you please confirm, are they as the photo...headers separate from the "Y" and clamped ..or one piece construction??

The big problem with the 1200's is that the Cat is in two sections. 1 in the 'Y' piece and another in the silencer.

It also runs very hot, so any end pipe fitted will probably need to be double skinned and positioned so it does not get too close/or point at any potential problem spots like the back of the number plate, panniers or the riders/passengers leg etc.

It could well end up being too complex and expensive to be worth making :(
But if you can come up with something at a reasonable price, I'm sure you'll easily sell a few. Especially if it means the pannier doesn't need a bloody great big cut out. :thumb2

I want a stubby for my R1150GS Adventure 2003.
Took the can off last night and nearly put my back out.
Cant beleive i have been lugging that around all these years.
BMW logic again...

+1 on Coolcarbons post. You can replace either the cat or the can but not both. The can is heavy and doesn't make much difference to the noise level when you remove it as the cat is also an EU marked silencer. It frees up the engine breathing, especially at low engine speeds where there appears to be more torque and flexibility. This leaves the way open for a stubby and full size left pannier.

The cat is also heavy but if you replace it with a "Y" piece you will have no silencing at all unless you put the can back on. This of course eliminates the pannier volume benefit.

I got local a local stainless exhaust fabricator to bend me a pipe to fit between the y pipe and silencer so I can fit the full size pannier. He also cut and bent a couple of stainless steel strips to attach the can at it's new position, it takes me about ten minutes to switch between the two set ups.
