This isn't going to be the most adventurous tour on here, not by a very, very long way. But it's our tour, our own personal mini-adventure, and represents the real beginning of an idea that germinated some many months back when, as non-bikers, Mrs J and I watched The Long Way Round and thought that maybe this was something we'd like to try ourselves. Two Direct Access Tests later and after three years of pottering around on our own bikes, and a tour of Thailand on Discovery Mototours' BMWs, we're finally taking the plunge and setting off, on our own, and on our own machines, me on my GSA ond Mrs J on her Guzzi Breva, to visit friends in Conil in Southern Spain.
We're not roughing it either, but have booked four and five star hotels and a decent cabin on the Portsmouth-Bilbao ferry. Ewan & Charlie we ain't! What this story is about is a dream that we had some years go turning into reality. We're not Lois Pryce overlanders, but we have tried to make it happen for us. So, here begins our trip.
We're setting off from Lincolnshire on 1st May, stopping off in Birmingham to visit family on the way down and taking the ferry from Portsmouth to Bilbao. We're spending a night in Salamanca, a night in Mérida and then six nights in Conil. On the way back, we're staying in Ciudad Real, Burgos and Bilbao itself before returning back home. Not massive mileages, nothing more than 300 miles a day as Mrs J wants plenty of stops and shopping opportunities.
But I'm strangely proud of what we've achieved so far and what we're setting out to do. So even though it's neither Cape Town nor New York, I thought you might be interested in hearing how it all goes. I'll keep you updated and post a few pictures.
If anyone has any tips or advice, that would always be most welcome. But watch this space.........!
