This isn't going to be the most adventurous tour on here, not by a very, very long way. But it's our tour, our own personal mini-adventure, and represents the real beginning of an idea that germinated some many months back when, as non-bikers, Mrs J and I watched The Long Way Round and thought that maybe this was something we'd like to try ourselves. Two Direct Access Tests later and after three years of pottering around on our own bikes, and a tour of Thailand on Discovery Mototours' BMWs, we're finally taking the plunge and setting off, on our own, and on our own machines, me on my GSA ond Mrs J on her Guzzi Breva, to visit friends in Conil in Southern Spain.

We're not roughing it either, but have booked four and five star hotels and a decent cabin on the Portsmouth-Bilbao ferry. Ewan & Charlie we ain't! What this story is about is a dream that we had some years go turning into reality. We're not Lois Pryce overlanders, but we have tried to make it happen for us. So, here begins our trip.

We're setting off from Lincolnshire on 1st May, stopping off in Birmingham to visit family on the way down and taking the ferry from Portsmouth to Bilbao. We're spending a night in Salamanca, a night in Mérida and then six nights in Conil. On the way back, we're staying in Ciudad Real, Burgos and Bilbao itself before returning back home. Not massive mileages, nothing more than 300 miles a day as Mrs J wants plenty of stops and shopping opportunities.

But I'm strangely proud of what we've achieved so far and what we're setting out to do. So even though it's neither Cape Town nor New York, I thought you might be interested in hearing how it all goes. I'll keep you updated and post a few pictures.

If anyone has any tips or advice, that would always be most welcome. But watch this space.........!

Choose your bar on the boat carefully! Try and use the POSH bar if possible - the riff-raff use the other one
Enjoy and post loads of piccies :thumb2

Oh, check the current laws re: spare bulbs, hi-viz vests etc and make sure you've got breakdown cover

Good on you Doc'.....and Mrs Doc'.....:thumb2

Done my fair share of this sort of thing, and the greatest 'journey' is in your head.....You will know what I mean when you get back...:)

I'm on the the Portsmouth-Bilbao ferry on the 1st.
Maybe catch you both in the first class bar :ChrisKelly the ballroom ....... :aidan
Or on the desk later :Motomartin
I'll be wearing my dinner suit (tosser gear) & black tyre around my neck.
I'm heading for Salamanca - Mérida - onto Ronda and Tarifa for the ferry to Africa.

Regards
Adrian

Good luck

Good luck with the trip. We are in a similar position. I have just returned to bikes after a few decades. We will do a Santander to Santiago de Compestela run in the early autumn. Look forward to your ride report and to learning a few vicarious lessons!

Looking forward to the report J :ChrisKelly I like your honesty of being inspired by Ewan & chum to do it, I think theres a lot out there who have been ;)

If you haven`t already done some I`d advise some long ride outs together as "training" days to get the bikes tweaked how you want them, and to get some sort of routine about riding together such as road positioning when you`re following each other and distance apart. :nenau

If you can afford it Doc get a set of intercoms for you and the missus.
you would be amaized how it improves your trip being able to chat about the scenery or just where to stop for a cuppa.
Also helps to give prompts about which exit on the junction your taking etc.

Check your ferry is the right one. sounds daft but brittany ferries now do portsmouth santander overnight. the portsmouth bilboa used to be 2 nights on board which is a nightmare. not sure what it is now.??

Enjoy your trip but be prepared for some nerves and self doubt!! sounds silly but it can be quite a scary thing being along way from home on your bike and this can affect even the most seasoned traveller.
bike and kit prep is good at putting your mind at ease and is also one of the most enjoyable bits leading up to the trip.

Go enjoy and be prepared to get addicted to touring...

Enjoy your adventure.

I'd do exactly the same thing, but my wife absolutely refuses to ride pillion or get her own bike.

She was knocked off one many years ago and now hates them.

- and if I did mange a tour, I too would book a hotel.

But............taken in the right spirit the 'riff-raff' bar is much more fun :thumb

You guys are gonna have a ball - one of the best 'tours' I ever did was 8 years ago with an ex who had just passed her test. Her on an SRX400 and me on my CCM Supermoto. We did pretty much an identical journey to yours :)

It's fun touring with somebody on the back to share experiances with but sooooo much better and 'special' when they are on their own bike.

Top tip from me :nenau Whilst I appreciate you have a schedule of sorts try not to be too proscriptive, let the 'trip' dictate where you end up and when - there's nothing worse than thinking you have to be in such and such a place by such and such a time.

Have fun :thumb2

Seems to me like you have it all sorted - good luck and hope you really enjoy the trip - I am not happy unless I am on my bike or at least can see it ;)

You must start to blog all your rides and adventures so you can look back on the and double enjoy the trips... We do www.whereistonynow.co.uk

I know loads of bikers who have still to venture out of the UK so as you say any trip is an adventure on a bike.

Hi Jonothan

We did our fist trip to Spain last year (May 08). We went Plymouth- Santander and spent a few days in the Picos region before heading home via the South of France.

Am booked to go back (same ferry route) in May and we have longer this time so hoping to explore ‘Historic Spain’. Possibly heading west (Santiago de Compostela ) or south to Seville, Cordoba and Granada. Then home via the Pyrenees to Calais.

Enjoy your trip and don’t forget that we need a full RR. :thumb2

OK, here's the route:

Arrive Bilbao at 8.00am on Monday 4th May

Monday May 4th
Bilbao to Salamanca (staying at the Palacio de San Estaban) 247 miles
Tuesday May 5th
Salamanca to Mérida (staying at the Mérida Palace Hotel) 170 miles
Wednesday May 6th
Mérida to Conil 208 miles

Tuesday May 12th
Conil to Ciudad Real (staying at the Santa Cecilia Hotel) 278 miles
Wednesday May 13th
Ciudad Real to Burgos (staying at the Corona de Castilla Hotel) 264 miles
Thursday May 14th
Burgos to Bilbao (staying at the López de Haro Hotel) 91 miles

Depart Bilbao at 2.30pm on Friday 15th May

I've sorted the routes and downloaded them into my Zumo 550.

All hotels are 4 or 5 star so proper posh, like, and all in the centres of the cities, close to shops and restaurants and stuff. That will make Mrs J happy.

I've spent some of the weekend fitting Bluetooth bike to bike comms to our helmets, and we've tested those and they work brilliantly. I've arranged breakdown cover for both bikes so, apart from getting both machines serviced, it looks like we're good to go.

Doc J, Are you already committed on the hotels front, - did you consider Paradores?- Some of them are splendid but not cheap either. - If not you could always try one for lunch!

Have fun on the trip. My wife and I did a driving hol in Spain last summer and saw some great places.

Cheers

We did indeed consider Paradores and we looked at a few. The problem with them is that they're mostly a way outside of urban areas. Mrs J (and I, if I'm honest) rather fancied arriving somewhere, showering and changing and having a wander around, doing some shopping and finding somewhere for dinner. The Spanish love this culture of going out and walking around the town centre after dinner (I think they call it "Passegiata" in Italy) and we love that, as you can really soak up the atmosphere that way.

They call it El Passeo, and as you say children, parents and grandparents all join in. Check out the Plaza de Europa in Merida. Well worth a visit in the evening. Pity you're not there on May day as they have a workers march through the town and then a carnival in the square. By the way the Parador in Merida is right in the centre of town. The bar is the old cloister of the Nunnery. More Roman pillars than you can shake a stick at.

We're off....!!

We left Grimsby today and have travelled to Birmingham to stay with my old Dad for the night.

Tomorrow we leave for Porstmouth to catch the Bilbao ferry which leaves at 8.00pm.

So far, so good. The bikes are running well, and Mrs J is very happy if a little nervous. The Scala Q2 is a great bike to bike comms so far, and I'll post some pictures soon.

Hasta la vista.

J

doesn't matter here the dream started, although as already stated love your honesty.
the main thing is you are now living that dream and that's makes it so special.
to many dreams stay dreams. :(
