strange one this I presume its the float sticking but it ran ok left it sytanding for about 6 weeks it emptied the contents of the fuel tank into the engine :blast

Took carb apart doesn't seem to be sticking, don't really know what to check or how I only get the odd hour here and there in the garage and forgot what a pain in the a@rse carbs can be

any Dr experts point me in the right direction

Easiest would be to check float level.
You can check by fitting a clear hose to the bowl drain, open the drain, hold the pipe next to the carb and see how high the fuel level sits at. Too high and the carb will continously overflow.
If it's already apart, then just clean everything using decent carb cleaner - take all jets out, use a decent screwdriver on each jet, use a pull through on the holes to make sure they are clear, soak everything in carb cleaner overnight.
Re-assemble without changing anything.
See if it still drains the tank.

Also on some models (not sure whether Suzuki have this) the fuel tap on the tank is activated by a vaccum pipe off the induction manifold, make sure the diaphram is sound and the tap is working by sucking on the pipe and see if fuel flows to carb.
Some mumblings which hope will help.

Take the float bowl off and check the movement.
Remove the float valve and clean the seat with a 'Q' tip ear thingy or similar, ideally with some carb cleaner on it.
Also check and clean the valve, you may have to fit a new float valve:thumb

You should turn the fuel tap off to prevent this, if you did then you'll need to overhaul the tap or fit a new one.

the fuel tap is one of those vacuum things, when you pull the fuel pipe off it doesn't let by so I presume the tap is ok

will get some carb cleaner I have had the jets out cleaned them no obvious sticking on the float valve
It was fine til i let it stand :blast

If the float's free, it'll be the seating of the float valve or the seat itself, either dirt, worn or fuel residue.

On my '99 model there's a rubber O-ring behind the needle valve seat. Replacing it cured my leak.
I located the carb parts fiche on ronayers.com but can't seem to post a link. I'm sure you'll be able to track it down.

I have noticed the valve seat is loose and comes out quite easy
I'll try to track down an o ring
