Hi

I have just acquired a DR350 which is more than a little bit of a basket case. It has 30 odd thousand miles on it but whilst lacking in compression it does not make to many untoward noises or smoke. Anyway this is my winter project with a view to some green laning, maybe some rallies and even considering a trip or two for some expeditions to northern Spain and Pyrenees when complete.

Regarding the motor, as a matter of course I am going to do a complete top end re-build and extensively check the crank for excessive play etc. The question is: is it justifiable is pulling it right down and splitting the cases and replacing all bearings etc. I have done this on many a two stroke but not a thumper. Experience tells me that some of the bearings can be oddities and expensive from main dealers only. The only reason I am slightly hesitant on ripping straight in is the need for the specialist tools required to split the cases, on two strokes I have always got away with a small 4lb lump hammer :augie.

If anybody has any experience of this motor etc I would appreciate to here your findings.

Cheers

simple enough motor, cant remember any funny bearings,???
most can be bought cheaper from bearing suppliers,
yams are the worst, they wanna sell you half a crank, when you can get a bearing from suppliers for 20 quid!
if your confident enough, change the crank bearings, wont cost much , !
if your going far, consider the big end bearing, and the primary shaft output bearing, and seal

I've got some new parts for sale if your intrested camchain,2 guides and tensioner plus gaskets too pm me if you like :thumb2

I was thinking more off the bearings on the likes of the shift drum etc, from what I remember on the 2/'s these were very difficult for the bearing shop to identify even by measuring and due to them being low profile etc were a premium. Anyway like you suggest if a jobs worth doing its worth doing well :augie.

Hi Forry

I am back on 12hr nightshift for the next 4 but will try to get a PM off to you later. Whilst I have not mention it yet it is an electric start motor with kick start added but the year of manufacture is unknown. I'll explain more when I get round to a PM.

Cheers

A quick picture of the sad old thing

Apparently the previous owner bought it to do just this years Ryedale Rally and then sold it on..his number was 86 but I could see no mention in the results for the bike.
