Drain oil before checking valve gaps?

I think I know the answer to this but I'd like reassurance before I make a nasty puddle on the drive.

I believe I can remove the valve covers to check the valve gaps without draining the engine oil or making a mess of the drive.

Correct or not?

Your right, there may be a little oil loss (Like an eggcup full from each side) so have some sort of container underneath to save your drive (Cat litter trays are cheap & ideal for this) ...... (Before someone says, without the litter!)

You'll get a very small amount of oil but that's all. Replaced one of my rocker covers recently due to one being corroded and an egg cup full of oil just about describes it perfectly!

It means I can do the valves, go for a test thrash then do the oil.

Last time I drained the oil the day before then did the valves.

Or indeed without the tray too. obviously you need a fluffy absorbent one

Au contraire, mon ami - cat litter (fullers earth) is the same as the pukka oil-absorbent granules that you can buy. It is superb for mopping up spills of anything oil-related.
