Flew into Portland, Oregon last night .We’re here for 96 hours so two words popped up-ROAD TRIP !
Booked a car through Avis and got a discount . Only rented for 48 hours as will have a couple of nights back here in Vancouver, Washington on my return -there’s a barbecue joint over the road and it’s shut on Mondays so we’re going Sunday night .
Pitched up at Avis with my booking for a RAV4 or similar, one group up from the cheapest car. They never have small cars available.Rental guy said I can give you a Jeep Grand Cherokee for same price -£89 all in .
Parked in D23.

Off I go …….

It’s huge-seven seats etc. That’ll do.

Head over to our hotel which is across the Colombia River in Vancouver, Washington then meet colleagues for a couple of beers at The Taphouse

Awake at 0400, what’s up, Doc ? 😜

Make a coffee and look at the map.
Sgt Bilco gave me a couple of ideas.

I’m either going to head to Bend for the night

Or head a bit further east towards John Day which will be more laid back .
Looks a nice small town with a couple of motels and pubs . Never stayed in a motel.

Plus there’s a nice brek cafe at Dayville that I’ve seen on here (MikeO, I think ) which is 35 minutes out of John Day heading back to Portland.

So I’ll head down Hwy26 and decide later then get on Booking.com.

Still dark outside

That’s the bridge over the Colombia that separates Washington state from Oregon.

Going to leave in an hour or so and head via favourite bagel place that opens at 0600.

Will post some pics later.

Heading back a different way this morning . It’s raining so think photos may be scarce. First stop-the Dayville Cafe for brek before I turn off the Hwy36 and take the 19 instead

Rain stopped as soon as I left John Day .
It’s so lovely out here . Just ranches and farms dottering the landscape

Looks like a good use of 4 days to me. The wife and I had an hour with an Oregon lady at a Manchester travel event recently and she pretty well suggested the route that you have taken.

On the coast she recommended Newport for seafood etc.

Thanks for the photos, they're right up my street.

Not at all envious that you drop in to all these places globally and have a day or three pottering about...no siree bob....

Between you and Steptoe ye have the life of Reilly each in a different way.
Fair dues to you both as the saying goes
"We not here for a long time so make it a good time "

Hwy19 was probably more picturesque than 26.
Loads of canyons then driving over the moors like in Wales

Then arrived here

Then back into the rain to follow the mighty Colombia River back to Portland

Dropped the Jeep off at PDX and just waiting for a Lyft over to Vancouver .

Time for a siesta before meeting the boys for barbecue joint tonight

always picked the 'spark or similar' when renting in usa as 95% itll be a corolla or an elantra (well used to doing long distances in small cars)

last time it was the same

actually did get a spark - went to MA and ME in it but it was florida reg - respec for driving it that far :D

did louisana to carolinas in a fiesta saloon :o

im jealous of your trip - only ever been over that side for a transfer - never to stop (always wanted to do oregon and montana)
