Funnily enough, John, I did wonder whether the sound was coming from that part of the exhaust during one of the episodes - that's definitely worth putting on the list of possibles for further investigation. Thanks!

No noise as you turn the ignition on and off. Noise only present with engine running. Are you thinking along the lines that the exhaust valve runs through a test cycle when you turn the power on?

Just wondered as I had a problem with mine and it used to squeal like a stuck pig when I turned ignition on and also when riding..... have you tried holding a longish screwdriver handle to your ear and resting the other end on various areas around the bike to try and locate any strange noise....
Thanks for the tip, John. I shall be getting my longish screwdriver out over the weekend for a bit of a play. How did you ultimately resolve your problem?

Bit of wd40 at first but that soon burns off...... You have to get inside it with a small wire brush......carbon builds up over time but my 14 plate LC has 44000 mls now...
The throttle bodies do emit a whining noise which can vary depending on temperature ,
the position of the intake flap effects the throttle motors sound,
bearings and gears are unlikeley to be intermittent,
once they fail its a constant noise,
