could anybody please tell me the best place for buying a new driveshaft for my 1990 R100GS/PD?
Any advice on how to fit it would be appreciated.

Thanks

I have read loads of threads of how to get one from the States and - get one with grease nipples etc.All extra cost etc.
I recon just get a standard one from Motoworks or Motobins ( sometimes Motobins have offers weeks ) It will more than likely see 40000 miles out if ridden on road not off, will any of us moan at that
Thats what I will be doing if it looks at all dodgy / and it dunt

They are very expensive new , but they can be repaired at a sensible price .

The going rate from the backyard BMW guys in Oz is around $A200- a joint.

My local Hardy Spicer shop has a listing for the joints , although they cant be bothered with the fitting as it needs a bit machine work, but you may have more luck.

The worn UJs are replaced with a slightly wider joint which has more bearing capacity.

Usually the new joint has provision for fitting a grease nipple, and the joint is fixed with a circlip so it is easier to replace if it does wear out.

The sliding splines on the shaft need the highest quality spline lube you can find too - the special stuff for the CV joints on Renault FWD cars works for me, and it also needs replacing regularly.

Boxer Supplies in Holland offer a reconditioning service on an exchange basis for the shaft, I believe its done by Guy Henderson in the States.

I'd considered using Guy for the work but shipping costs to the US and the potential of being charged duty for the work done when the shaft came back concerned me.

Using Boxer Supplies would make a lot of sense:thumb2

i got mine reconditioned by guy henderson. because after speaking to jim cray i decided i didnt want to take the risk of buying a new one from bwm as the last 3 jim supplied failed within 20000miles. a recon costs less than new (only just) and the uj's are easy to replace with standard parts from automotive suppliers. if you look you will find engeneering firms in the uk who can replace the uj's but i couldnot find any one to replace the damper.

My local 4WD suspension specialist can repot urathane joints no problem - he has a jig to do the joints on auto steering colums which seems to be accurate enough.

Replacement steering cols for cars cost even more than our driveshafts, and some go just as often.

The old rubber is burnt out, the joint sandblasted and set in the jig and the new urathane in your chosed grade poured in, and not a lot of cost was involved.
