Second trip out on it. Just coming out my drive and it felt different because the hill start option was on. It's a safer option but it caused me to lose balance when I wanted to roll back a bit.
Fortunately I'd bought engine bars which took the brunt of it. Top box has a scratch in the corner and a scratch on handlebar. I got away very lightly but was pretty gutted and just spent the day wobbling around on it due to lost confidence. Much better today tho.

Thought I might struggle to lift it but was fine. Struggled to get it started for a few mins before I realised it was in gear.

Hopefully that's got it out my system.

I was doing a slow u-turn on my KTM1290 on a narrow country lane with a rutted passing place on my recent trip. Upon completing my turning, I wanted to stop and let the car that was a little distance behind me to get by, so that I could carry on my way. As I was coming to a gentle stop, I applied from brake to just bring the bike to a complete and controlled stop, when suddenly I found myself slightly of balance because hill hold control got engaged (I wasn’t expecting it to) and I wanted to roll back just a bit. I wasn’t ready for it to engage nor am I used to having such feature on my last two bikes, both being GS. I thought to myself sod this for a laugh,as I am not prepared to drop the bike and made an instant decision to turn that feature off.

It is crap in any case, you’d think it is there for when you at the light on a slight incline, pop it into neutral, activate and let it hold the bike without holding on to a brake yourself. No it doesn’t work that way. The moment you select neutral, the system deactivated and you can not activate it again until you select 1st gear. When in 1st gear and sat at the light with system activated, after 5 seconds of not holding the brake to keep it active. The hill hold function deactivates. :blast

So by turning feature off, I’ve returned to my usual method of selecting 1st gear, and turn engine off, it takes seconds to restart again and you get a chance to rest your hands, shoulders & arms without worrying about the bike getting away from under you.

Not sure about bmw, but on KTM the feature only works when bike pointing up the hill, downhill it does not activate. So it is sort of a half hearted attempt to assist you, while hindering at same time.

My first GSA back in 2006 was a Cat D because it had been pushed over. Probably had the same marks as you have - I reckoned if I bought one of them brand new - I’d have got it to the condition of mine, within a couple of weeks.

I think most people drop them at one stage or another.

The irony of Hill Hold, assisting riders to drop their bikes in certain situations

A great 'safety' aid

You couldn't make it up

What is wrong with time honoured 'Hendon shuffle'

You have to manually engage hill hold on the BMW . To operate you need to squeeze the front lever which has a handbrake effect. I’m pretty sure if you engage the Hill start then turn the bike off, it disengages too. So OP was your bike started up and running ?

Not on the new 1250’s. You can do it manually but it also can be set to auto, default from the stealer on mine so I reset it to manual immediately. On auto it was scary.
Yes, if engine off, HS deactivates. I just use it as a handbrake when stopped on a slope and activate and deactivate using the brake lever. Works well.

Thanks for that didn’t know they had modded it to auto On a 1250.

my bike doesn't have this feature , but i've dropped it at a standstill ? do you always have to put the side stand out when you get off ?

HTH.

Sidestand !! No good when I put in down a grate at side of road ! Lol

I love Hill Hold. I was so anti until I got it and now it is one of my favourite features. Had it on my K16GT as well. So simple to use, just stop, squeeze the lever and the bike wont move. You can put both feet down flat, talk to your pillion, go through your tank bag etc. Put it back in gear and open the throttle and it disengages as you pull away. Brilliant.

Had a funny moment in the Alps with a mate on a new MTS. We both stopped on a hill and engaged it. Sitting there chatting and suddenly he shouted and looked weird as the bike rolled backwards. On the MTS it turns off after nine seconds :blast

Seem like BMW hill hold feature is much better than that on KTM. I recall on my RT test ride, I was in Henley pointing downhill and it worked nicely.

Well I feel a bit better that others have had similar experience to me. But still p*ssed off with myself for doing it. Glad I had the (BMW - I know there was some conversation about which was the best option) engine bars tho.
Not sure whether to leave it on or turn it off now!

Turn it off.

Is it just me then?

I've found it quite useful at times
